Historian rebukes Sky News on ‘shameful complicity in war crimes’ over Lebanon coverage

British historian William Dalrymple has sharply rebuked Sky News, accusing the outlet of “shameful complicity in war crimes” after it characterized Israel’s war on Lebanon as “taking a much tougher stance” rather than the “ethnic cleansing of one quarter of a neighbouring state.”

In what lexicon is ethnically cleansing one quarter of a neighbouring state “taking a much tougher stance”. Shameful complicity in war crimes by @SkyNews @adamparsons https://t.co/Tuh0WoEBfm

— William Dalrymple (@DalrympleWill) June 1, 2026

Adam Parsons, the Sky News correspondent, had used the words “taking a much tougher stance,” and tried to argue with Dalrymple and defend US/Israeli war crimes by saying:

“Ethnic cleansing” is not an expression that should be chucked around. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but smart people – and I would have imagined William Dalrymple was smart – would know the difference between their opinions and incredibly complex, difficult definitions.
Parsons, who is happy to whitewash war crimes, is scared of expressions being “chucked around.”

Lebanon: Dalrymple steps in

Thankfully, Dalrymple proceeded to school the “morally bankrupt” journalist correctly.
The historian explained it plainly that over one in five people in Lebanon have been forced from their homes, and Israel’s own leaders have said that they will demolish villages, prevent displaced people, mostly Shia, from ever returning, and create a permanent security zone inside Lebanon.
He pointed out that under international law, deliberately displacing a religious group and making their return impossible amounts to ethnic cleansing:

I can’t see you how you can possibly avoid using the term ethnic cleansing, without losing your last remaining shreds of integrity as a journalist, Adam.

Lebanon’s internal displacement rate is now 22.6 percent — more than one in five of its people. Over 1.2 million people,…

— William Dalrymple (@DalrympleWill) June 1, 2026

The historian is explaining to a Western brainwashed journalist what ethnic cleansing is. Of course, he knows, the blindness is wilful.

Western media appears to celebrate Israel’s illegality

The corporate Western media have been celebrating Israel’s illegal actions in Lebanon recently.

The Associated Press, CNN, Financial Times, and Reuters all used words such as “seized”, “strategic”, “major advance”, and “expands” to describe Israel’s illegal invasion and occupation, all of which are war crimes, especially its stealing of the Qal’at al-Shaqif Castle in southern Lebanon.

Irish Journalist Steve Sweeney, who was recently almost killed by Israel, said that Parsons’ view was representative of the role of Western media in covering the ethnic cleansing in Lebanon and the genocide in Gaza.

Absolutely spot on. This is more than just the opinion of an individual journalist, it exposes the role of Western media in covering up for ethnic cleansing in Lebanon and the genocide in Gaza. https://t.co/gLzkSFqiTJ

It’s indeed not complex, Parsons. Like Dalrymple said, you have just lost your remaining shreds of integrity as a journalist.

Ethnic cleansing or genocide – ‘the partial or total destruction of a human group, committed intentionally. […] in the scholarly and legal fields, genocide occurs when the group itself is targeted. Acts of genocide include killing as well as non-lethal acts such as preventing reproduction among the group, the forcible transfer of children to another group, and cultural genocide.’ – ?

In Israel’s neverending war with Hezbollah in August 2025, images showed pre-school children being rushed out of their school in Tebnine, Southern Lebanon, during an Israeli bombardment https://www.facebook.com/trtworld/videos/cctv-footage-captures-the-moment-an-israeli-strike-shook-al-batoul-nursery-in-te/1298435761818800/ This was during a period of ‘ceasefire’. More recently (in April 2026) the hospital in Tebnine – the only functioning public hospital in the region – was targeted. Reports say that the casuality ward was destroyed and those who went to the aid of the victims were themselves targeted as a part of a ‘double tap’ attack (some use the term ‘quadruple tap’).

According to Unicef (and the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health) at least 3,412 people have been killed (including 241 children) and more than 10,269 injured (including 939 children) in the Lebanon. 1,100,000 people have been displaced across the country (including 390,000 children). Southern Lebanon resembles Gaza more and more as does what Israel is doing there.

What a pity there are no ‘Labour Friends of Lebanon’ – even if Palestine ‘and the middle east’ have a few – to stand up to those of Israel, far greater in number – I wonder why. Vote them out!
