Haaland eclipses Messi and Ronaldo with speed of 60 goal milestone

Erling Haaland’s 60th international goal was not merely another milestone in his career. Instead, it was a figure that carried a greater message to the world of football. The Norwegian striker needed just 53 international appearances to reach this milestone, placing himself in direct comparison with the greatest goalscorers of the modern era and confirming that his path towards record-breaking feats is proceeding at an exceptional pace.

Haaland’s achievement came during Norway’s campaign at the 2026 World Cup, after he took his tally to 60 international goals – a figure that France’s Kylian Mbappé needed 100 matches to reach, whilst Argentina’s Lionel Messi only achieved it after 122 matches, whilst Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo had to wait until his 130th international match before scoring his 60th goal.

Haaland races to milestone

This comparison in no way diminishes the legacy left by Ronaldo or Messi on the international stage; the former became the all-time leading international goalscorer after surpassing the 140-goal mark for Portugal, whilst the latter etched his name in gold after leading Argentina to the World Cup title. However, it does reveal a different aspect of the rivalry: the speed at which they reached the top.

Haaland reached the 60-goal mark 47 matches ahead of Mbappé and 69 matches ahead of Messi, whilst he achieved the same milestone 77 matches before Ronaldo – a statistic that reflects an exceptional goalscoring rate which no star of the current generation has managed to match.

A record that has stood for more than half a century

Despite his overwhelming dominance over the stars of the modern era, the historic record for the fastest to reach 60 international goals remains in the name of German legend Gerd Müller, who achieved this feat in 48 matches in 1973.

More than 53 years on from that record, Haaland has become the first player to come so close to it, having needed just 53 matches to bring back into the spotlight a feat that had eluded football’s top scorers for decades – including Ronaldo and Messi – before the Norwegian striker came along and put it back in the limelight.

Haaland is still only 24 years old, giving him a golden opportunity to continue chasing records that have long been considered constants in the history of the game, whilst he continues to write one of the fastest goal-scoring runs ever seen in international football.
