Green Party celebrates four by-election wins in London

The Green Party continued its winning streak in London on 25 June with four by-election wins.

Green party candidates won in Dalston, Hackney Central, North Acton, and Woodside. Although the party had already taken many of these seats in May, the new by-election wins show its momentum in parts of the capital remains strong.

Green party performance in Dalston and Hackney Central

Hackney saw perhaps the biggest Green wave in the 2026 local elections. There had been strong collaboration between Greens and local independent socialists. And there was a massive swing away from Labour, particularly in working-class areas.

The Hackney ward of Dalston needed to have a by-election because Green winner Zoë Garbett also became Hackney’s new mayor. Although turnout was just 13% — down from 40% in May — Green party candidate Manal Massalha won the by-election.

In Hackney Central, meanwhile, the Greens had discovered too late that one of its winning candidates in May had been ineligible to run. But Green party candidate Noah Birksted-Breen won the by-election, despite turnout falling from 39% to 15%.

Two Haringey wards: One Green win in Woodside

The Greens and independent socialists had a good relationship in Haringey, where they were seeking to send a strong message to the local MP David Lammy. The Green Party became the biggest party locally, gaining 28 councillors.

In the Woodside ward, however, the Green party winner in May announced soon after the election that she couldn’t take on the role for personal reasons. Although turnout fell from 36% to 24%, Green party candidate Elara Shurety won the by-election.

Elsewhere in Haringey, however, there was a Green party loss. The party had stood a candidate in the Northumberland Park ward in May that it later discovered to be ineligible. He won despite the party not campaigning in the ward. And a by-election on 25 June saw Labour retake this seat by 38 votes.

One Ealing ward — North Acton

The Green party hadn’t actively campaigned in Ealing’s North Acton ward in May, but a paper candidate won anyway. He quickly resigned, citing health reasons.

Local independent socialists criticised how a lack of coordination with the Greens had allowed Labour to keep many more councillors than voters wanted. In protest at the resignation in North Acton, Ealing Community Independents stood a candidate in the by-election.

Although turnout dropped from 37% to 24% between May and June, support for the Green Party in the ward remained strong. Marijn van de Geer became the new Green councillor for North Acton.
