The ‘Moog 4’ anti-genocide activists who were put on trial for direct action against an arms firm supplying Israel have walked free from Birmingham Crown Court today. The jury in the trial was split and refused to convict the activists despite the prosecution claiming the decision to convict would be “simple”.
The activists were charged with breaking into the Wolverhampton factory of Moog Aircraft Group, which supplies parts to Israel for the colony’s F-35 strike aircraft used to slaughter Palestinian civilians. They were accused of damaging weapons components and occupying the factory’s roof. They told the jury that:
We believed the longer we stayed up there, the more lives we would save. The idea was that the longer we stay on the roof, the longer the factory would be shut down.
Moog 4 — Freedom to defend
Unlike in the recent ‘Filton 4’ convictions, the defendants were not prevented from explaining the reasons for their action and emphasised the need for direct action to save lives. The da3m support group posted footage of Iain Evans, Hisham Alkhamesi, Hana Yun-Stevens and Frank Sherman as they walked out of the courtroom to freedom. With a ‘no conviction’ decision, however, the Starmer regime may well apply to re-try them:
