Manchester United win the North West derby and return to the Champions League

Manchester United have made a grand return to the continental stage, having officially secured their place in the Champions League with three matches remaining in the Premier League season, following a thrilling 3-2 victory over their traditional rivals Liverpool in the English Classico at Old Trafford on Sunday evening.

The victory was not merely three points, but a clear declaration of the Red Devils return to their rightful place amongst Europe’s elite, following a turbulent spell under Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim. With Michael Carrick taking the reins, the team’s fortunes changed rapidly, transforming them into one of the most consistent and effective sides in recent weeks.

United have taken their tally to 64 points in third place, behind leaders Manchester City and runners-up Arsenal, officially securing their place in the Champions League, at a time when it has been confirmed that at least five English clubs will feature in the next edition of the continental competition.

Dramatic Manchester United return to the Champions League

United started the match strongly and ended the first half two goals ahead, courtesy of Brazilian Matheus Cunha and Slovenian Benjamin Sesko in the 6th and 14th minutes, capitalising on a decisive attacking surge that threw Liverpool off balance early on.

But the visitors’ response came quickly at the start of the second half, with Hungarian Dominik Szoboszlai pulling one back, before Dutchman Cody Gakpo levelled the match with a second goal, in a scenario that brought the tension back to the stands at Old Trafford.

Amidst the back-and-forth, young Englishman Kobbie Mainoo emerged in the 77th minute to seal the deal with a third goal that restored United’s lead, igniting the stands and putting his side one step away from a return to the Champions League.
