Welsh Reform politicians are embarrassing themselves in the Senedd

Reform’s Wales representatives in the Senedd are showing themselves up in multiple serious discussions. Supposedly the formal opposition in the nation’s devolved parliament, Reform look increasingly foolish.

The Members of the Senedd (MSs) are on record making various bloopers, not taking subjects seriously, and generally cocking-up. Not worth the £80,000 salary they’re plumped with.

Reform ‘having a mare’

Cardiff-based Welsh journalist Will Hayward caught one Reform MS sorely lacking when he was entirely unprepared to ask a follow-up question, or ‘supplementary,’ on the Senedd floor.

MS Gareth Beer asked a question which couldn’t have taken more than 30 seconds to think of, then blindly sits back and thinks, apparently, about his next meal. Or something deep like that.

Then — SHOCK — he’s asked if he’d like to contribute a response to the Plaid Cymru politician’s answer. He sheepishly, embarrassedly mutters “I don’t have one.” Hayward reacted online:

Hayward commented that Reform’s Senedd representatives are “having a mare” in the Welsh Parliament.

Inappropriate joking

Earlier in June, Hayward exposed Reform’s Welsh politicians for joking inappropriately about serious issues, such as child illiteracy, on the Senedd floor.

His jokes — unfunny, it goes without saying — were so deeply offensive and in poor taste that multiple Senedd members walked out in protest. Hayward wrote online:

Wales has some deep rooted problems that require seriousness, nuance and real political leadership to fix. Proper opposition is vital. What we don’t need is the smugly delivered political equivalent to the worst best man speech you’ve ever read seen.

Failing at divisive politics

More happily, Welsh Reform lost an important vote for themselves this week. They rallied against the pro-migrant, progressive ‘Nation of Sanctuary‘ Senedd bill, and failed badly to pass it.

Reform’s Welsh leader, Dan Thomas MS, said that the policy

puts illegal arrivals ahead of the queue. …

We need to scrap this virtue-signalling…

The response from other politicians was mighty, however. Plaid representative Sioned Williams MS called on the sentiment of “Never Again,” enshrined in international law after WWII, and the duty to protect those made “illegal.” Williams stated in the Senedd:

Not only are you lacking in compassion, you are historically illiterate. …

Never Again would backs be turned when people deemed illegal, deemed inhuman, stripped of their citizenship and their rights, delegitimised and persecuted such as the Jewish people of Europe…

William’s valiant speech was met with stomping feet and roaring applause in the chamber. Her colleague Elfed Williams MS also smartly rebutted the notion that refugees are “illegal” under British and international law. How refreshing that a politician should actually challenge that now-normalised, horrible phrase.
