BUYER’S GUIDE · 2026
There is a meaningful difference between a container conversion and a bespoke container build, and the UK companies who genuinely operate in the second category are a much smaller group than the websites suggest. A conversion modifies a standard container to a use case the converter has done many times before. A bespoke build starts from a brief that no template fits: cutting through structural steel for roof lights, joining multiple containers into a single floor plate, integrating regulated electrical or mechanical plant, or designing a unit that has to pass technical inspection rather than just look right.
Many UK suppliers list ‘bespoke’ on their websites. Far fewer can deliver it. The companies here can, and their published evidence (named clients, technical project work, structural-engineer-led builds, MoD and HS2 references) backs the claim up. We’ve kept the list to five because padding it further would mean including companies whose ‘bespoke’ work is really an upgraded conversion. Universal Containers takes the top spot for the depth of their design-led process; the other four are ranked by the specific bespoke niche each owns most credibly.

EDITOR’S PICK
1. Universal Containers
Manchester (Irlam, M44) · CAD design consultation · Nationwide delivery
Verdict: Universal earns the top spot on the strength of a published design-first process that prevents the most common bespoke failure mode: mid-build discovery that the brief was misunderstood.
Best for: First-time bespoke buyers, anyone bringing an idea rather than a finished spec, and any project where the buyer cannot afford to discover mid-build that the brief was misunderstood.
What they do well:Â
- Design before quoting. The CAD team works with the buyer to develop a buildable spec before the build phase begins. The buyer’s brief (anything from a rough sketch to fully designed CAD files) is turned into an agreed design first, the build follows.
- Single accountable team. Every bespoke build passes through the same Irlam yard with the same welders, fabricators, electricians, and carpenters touching the unit. One quality standard, one point of contact if something needs revisiting in year five.
- Specific-problem-specific-solution flow. The published 10ft generator housing case is a useful microcosm: client needed multiple apertures and louvred vents with cover hoods to keep water out, the CAD team designed it, they built it accordingly.
- Broad bespoke portfolio. Documented bespoke work across transport, hospitality, sport, off-grid, industrial chemical, retail, heritage, and welfare.
Notable projects:Â
- 40ft truck-stop shower unit for Eddie Stobart
- Locomotive Society railway museum and workshop
- COSHH-compliant chemical storage unit (industrial)
- 10ft generator housing for off-grid client
- 32x10ft transport welfare facility (Peak District)
- 20ft multi-bay self-storage build (eight rooms, steel partitions)
- 20ft gas bottle store with ATEX ventilation
2. Eldapoint Group
Liverpool HQ · Founded 1968 · Entirely in-house manufacture
Verdict: The premium choice when the build has to pass extreme technical inspection, when finish quality is non-negotiable, or when other converters have declined to quote.
Best for: Polar research, rail network infrastructure, oil and gas applications, and the highest-end retail and hospitality conversions for established brands.
What they do well:Â
- Steel fabrication heritage. Founded 1968 as a manufacturer of steel pressings and formed metal sections. This is a steel business that happens to do containers, and the finish quality reflects the difference.
- Entirely in-house. CAD designers, welders, carpenters, floor layers, paint sprayers and electricians on the same payroll.
- Steel-handling depth. Wider business spans steel building manufacture, waste management containers, and reefer refurbishment.
Notable projects:Â
• Specialist Antarctic conversion units for the British Antarctic Survey
- Highest GRP DNO enclosure on the UK rail network
- Cyclewise bespoke build, Lake District
3. S Jones Containers
Midlands HQ · 40+ years in UK container work
Verdict: The engineering-led bespoke builder, with a portfolio of technical and infrastructure work other UK suppliers simply don’t have.
Best for: Electrical infrastructure housing, plant rooms requiring secure access and fire-safety compliance, water and waste treatment units, battery storage applications, lab-grade specialist workspaces.
What they do well:Â
- Engineering specialism. Builds engineered for durability, compliance and performance against demanding industry standards. The scoping questions surface the regulatory requirements less specialised builders miss.
- Published timeline transparency. Basic modifications take 2-4 weeks; fully customised bespoke builds take longer, scaled by complexity.
- Visit-during-build access. Explicitly invites clients to visit the Midlands facility to see bespoke work in progress.
Notable projects:Â
- Switchgear containers for the HS2 project
- Battery development units for Warwick Manufacturing Group
- Motor Control Centre housing
- Custom plant rooms for a global water treatment leader
- Aeroponic container farms
- Traffic signal battery charging solutions for Traffic Group Signals
4. Halletts Spaces
Wiltshire · Architect-led process · Structural engineers involved on every bespoke project
Verdict: The bespoke builder for ambitious multi-container projects where structural engineering, planning permission, and architectural features are part of the brief.
Best for: Multi-container food courts, hospitality projects with structural complexity, public-realm builds with council and architect involvement, and bespoke builds with rooftop terraces, larch cladding, or other features that change the basic geometry of the containers.
What they do well:Â
- Structural-engineer-led process. Every bespoke conversion delivered with structural engineers involved throughout. Safety inspections cover structural integrity, insulation, ventilation, electrical, plumbing, fire safety, and accessibility compliance.
- Planning integration. Larger projects: works with the client’s architects or council planning teams using existing planning drawings. Smaller projects: develops both the plan and structural drawings collaboratively.
- Complex feature portfolio. Documented track record of rooftop terraces, bi-fold doors, French doors, sliding doors, large windows, larch timber cladding, roller shutters, and lift-up serving hatches.
5. Containers Direct
North Wales HQ · Multi-depot UK delivery · Established 1998
Verdict: The bespoke builder whose own headquarters tells you most of what you need to know about their confidence in the product.
Best for: Bespoke builds requiring brand finish or moderate engineering, where Eldapoint’s premium isn’t justified and Halletts’ architectural process isn’t warranted.
What they do well:Â
- Dog-fooded credibility. Their own main office is built from eleven joined shipping containers, and some workshops are built from joined 40ft used units. Few competitors back their bespoke product so visibly with their own infrastructure.
- Useful range. Engineering-grade MoD work at one end, branded retail builds for national names like Superdry at the other, plus a long tail of smaller bespoke jobs.
- New-build bespoke dimensions. Manufactures new-build containers to bespoke dimensions, useful when standard 20ft or 40ft footprints don’t match the available site.
Notable projects:Â
- Ministry of Defence engineering work
- Branded retail builds for Superdry
- Coffi Camlan garden centre, Snowdonia
- Their own HQ (built from 11 joined containers)
