Palestinian children playing football threatened with a gun

The Palestinian Football Association has documented a new incident reflecting the reality of daily harassment, after an armed Israeli settler threatened Palestinian children whilst they were playing football on a pitch in the southern West Bank.

The incident, which the Association revealed in an official statement on its Facebook page and documented with a video clip, was not an isolated incident but rather part of a wider context; it was the latest in a series of ongoing pressures targeting the region’s residents, particularly children, in an attempt to deprive them even of the most basic play areas.

The Association attached a video documenting the moment the settler was present with his weapon inside the stadium grounds, a scene that caused widespread shock on social media platforms.

According to the statement, this incident is directly linked to ongoing efforts to displace the residents of Khirbet Um al-Khair, as the Israeli authorities had previously issued a demolition notice last February for the playground, which is the only recreational space for children in the area.

This follows a campaign of incitement led by settlers, alongside the Refa’im organisation, which viewed the playground as an obstacle to settlement expansion.

Palestinian sports under occupation

The issue extends beyond this playground, as the Palestinian Football Association notes that the targeting of sports infrastructure has become a systematic pattern, with the destruction of no fewer than 265 sports facilities in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, reflecting the direct impact on the right of children and young people to participate in sport.

Beyond the details of this incident, these developments coincide with recent escalations on the international stage, where the President of the Palestinian Football Association, Jibril Rajoub, raised the issue during the 2026 FIFA Congress, emphasising that what is happening is no longer isolated incidents, but a recurring policy that deprives players, especially children, of their natural right to play.

Rajoub emphasised that resorting to legal channels, including the Court of Arbitration for Sport, came after all other avenues had been exhausted, in an attempt to establish a reality that guarantees Palestinians the right to play football with dignity, on their own land, free from any restrictions or threats.

In Khirbet Um al-Khair, the scene does not merely appear to be a suspended match, but rather a living space that has grown even more confined… where a simple pitch has become the setting for a struggle that transcends football, encapsulating a daily tale of confrontation over the most basic of rights.

This incident comes against the backdrop of the systematic eradication of Palestinian sport and follows on from the destruction by the occupation of sports facilities and pitches in Gaza, and the killing of over 1,000 athletes during the war in Gaza.
