Lionel Messi changed the nature of individual competition in the 2026 World Cup with just one match. His opening hat-trick wasn’t just a perfect start for Argentina. It was an early warning that the race for the Golden Boot and Best Player award would be fierce.

The world’s focus has shifted. Fans are no longer just watching team results. They are tracking how tournament stars respond to the target Messi set early on. Messi leads the race with seven goals. His performance has ignited an exceptional battle among four other global superstars.

Mbappe, Haaland, Dembele and Vinicius Jr are all in the mix

Kylian Mbappe responded immediately. The reigning top scorer knew a slow start could cost him the Golden Boot. He scored match after match, reaching seven goals and becoming Messi’s closest challenger.

Mbappe is driving France, not just chasing goals. He proves in every match that he is Les Bleus’ key weapon. His influence extends from scoring to deciding critical matches.

Erling Haaland entered the tournament as Europe’s top scorer. However, Messi’s hat-trick presented a new challenge. He has scored five goals so far, confirming his place in the race.

His true challenge is proving his club form can translate into a World Cup legacy for Norway.

Ousmane Dembele was not a top scorer favorite before the tournament. However, his brilliance with France has changed the narrative. With four goals, his role has evolved.

He is now a decisive part of the French system. He no longer just creates chances; he finishes them himself. Although he trails Messi by three goals, France’s progress keeps him firmly in the race.

Vinicius Junior has four goals, but his value to Brazil goes beyond stats. He is the engine of the attack. By combining scoring, playmaking, and creating space, his impact is far greater than his goal tally suggests.

As the knockout stages begin, Vinicius knows every goal brings him closer to Messi. It also boosts his bid for the tournament’s Best Player award.

A race beyond goals

Messi’s opening match wasn’t just a historic hat-trick. It was a defining moment that reshaped the World Cup competition map. Since that day, every goal, celebration, and play from the other stars is viewed in one light: are they closing the gap on Messi?

The Argentina captain ignited the race. He forced the world’s biggest stars into an early competition for individual glory, influence, and team leadership in the 2026 World Cup.
