Messi breaks 56-year-old World Cup record

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has made World Cup history, becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive tournament matches. He achieved this milestone during Argentina’s 3-1 victory over Jordan on Sunday, which concluded the 2026 World Cup group stage.

This historic goal occurred during Messi’s 29th World Cup appearance and marked his sixth goal in the current tournament, serving as another highlight in the Argentina captain’s extraordinary international career.

Despite starting as a substitute, Messi made an immediate impact, curling in a superb free-kick from 25 meters out in the 80th minute to extend his team’s lead and set an unprecedented record.

With this goal, the Argentine star broke a record that had stood since the 1970 World Cup, surpassing both Brazil’s Jairzinho, who scored in six consecutive games, and France’s Just Fontaine, who achieved a similar streak in 1958.

Messi’s scoring streak began in the knockout stages of the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where he netted goals against Australia in the Round of 16, the Netherlands in the quarter-finals, and Croatia in the semi-finals, followed by two goals in the final against France to secure Argentina’s third world title.

His form continued into the 2026 World Cup, starting with a hat-trick against Algeria, two goals against Austria, and finally the goal against Jordan, extending his scoring run to seven consecutive matches — a feat unmatched in the tournament’s history.

The Argentina captain also brought his career World Cup tally to 19 goals. He continues to solidify his status as one of the tournament’s greatest goal-scorers, adding yet another milestone to his record-breaking career as Argentina pursues its title defense.
