The Green Party sums up the state of the world in a devastating Christmas video

There are just a few days until Christmas. And as political parties often do, the Green Party has released a Christmas video.

But this one is a little different. Instead of offering typical festive wishes, it delivers a devastating critique of the state of the world.

Silent nightmare

The video, titled Silent Nightmare, features high profile party figures reading a re-worked version of the poem The Night Before Christmas:

The Green Party’s reimagined poem isn’t filled with the festive cheer like the original. Rather, the party focuses on contemporary injustices, from the plight of refugees to climate change and air pollution. It opens with MP Caroline Lucas and member of the House of Lords Jenny Jones stating:

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the land, division and conflict, red lines in the sand. War and racism, with no sense or reason. It’s hard to be merry, this Christmas season.

The video goes on to lay blame for the world’s ills on world leaders. The party’s equalities spokesperson Rashid Nix names Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Jair Bolsanaro, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Vladimir Putin as guilty parties.

Not the first time

This isn’t the first time the Green Party has captured pressing political issues in a video. In 2016, its election broadcast highlighted the absurdity of political bickering and backstabbing:

And before that, the Greens eerily predicted the nature of the debate on the EU that we’d see for the following four years:

In the latest video, the Greens have once again shown the failures of our politicians and of governments across the world. And while so much political and media attention in the UK is focused on Brexit, this is an important reminder of the many ongoing injustices slipping under the radar.
