A Twitter/X-based account, HJB News, claimed to have posted a video of a ‘recently arrived migrant’. However, all was not as it seems as people quickly uncovered that contrary to the claim, the video does not show newly arrived migrants. The post has been exposed as a deliberate attempt to stoke misinformation, highlighting how easily migrant misinformation spreads.

Wow I actually know the guy who made this video, he is a British citizen and a well known property investor. This intentional misinformation to stoke up ratial tension should be a crime https://t.co/GdWepo5w5N

The bullshit machine

HJB News’ migrant misinformation may have fooled a number of people. However, many of these accounts are using VPNs and may not actually be British: they could be from anywhere, no different to migrants. Misinformation about migrants continues to be a tool used to mislead.

I’m a native Englishwoman &i live in a horribly old council house. I’m disabled due to a rare condition & I’d never get something even close to this . https://t.co/NCGkcLP0Oz

Another VPN warrior wants Starmer “tried for treason”:

Makes me feel sick, this government should tried for treason https://t.co/sb9AMrNB2m

Meanwhile, an American writes:

This is bullshit! Starmer needs to be removed from office IMMEDIATELY!

There are citizens sleeping in the streets, yet these invaders that AREN'T EVEN REAL ASYLUM SEEKERS get new houses. https://t.co/3oVpXZhsm7

While we’re incredibly critical of Elon Musk’s Twitter, the Community Note system does at least mean a decent amount of people were able to spot this trickery — and counteract migrant-related misinformation.

Act based in France claims to be in London. Lies abt houses. Migrants don’t get houses in uk. Actually. No fucker does https://t.co/0qQjN11edt pic.twitter.com/OeOu5VOsay

You should be arrested bro, people like you are part of the reason this country is going down the toilet. You fear mongering troglodyte. https://t.co/8s7ZrAFKP4

Home is where the house is

A point to end on is that it shouldn’t seem outlandish that the government could set a person up with a nice, clean house — including migrants. The reason it isn’t commonplace is because we’ve decided to prioritise the wants of private landlords over the needs of everyone else.
