The first few months of the year are when many people’s attention turns to the latest health trends. Personalised anti-ageing is a health trend that is gaining popularity and is set to be big for the year ahead. At the forefront of this trend is a coenzyme named NAD+.

Many recent studies have explored the anti-ageing properties of NAD+, including how it can help to reverse the impact of ageing in our body and help us feel more youthful for longer. Here, we explore: Is NAD+ the key to anti-ageing? And we’ll help you find a clinic offering NAD+ in London.

Understanding NAD+: Is it the key to anti-ageing?

NAD+, also known as Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide, is a coenzyme that is essential for the function of mitochondria in our cells. Mitochondria are organelles (specialised structures within cells) that power our cells and give us energy; they play a key part in the body’s biological processes, acting as a metabolic regulator. NAD+ is known for its vital role in energy production, DNA repair and genome stability. It helps the body get rid of toxins, is involved in regeneration of organs, and prevention against metabolic diseases. NAD+ also aids in regulating circadian rhythm, which results in better sleep, and subsequently, better mood and improved mental clarity.

Our NAD+ levels decline as we age, leading to the commonly known effects of ageing such as loose skin, fatigue, joint pains, poor immunity and overall declining health. Lifestyle factors such as stress, pollution in the environment, poor diet and chronic diseases can also negatively impact NAD+ levels.

Research reveals that when the body has adequate levels of NAD+, the signs we typically associate with ageing are reduced. How? NAD+ is known to reduce the oxidative stress in our cells. Oxidative stress is one of the main contributors of ageing. In addition to this, NAD+ also activates sirtuins, a type of protein linked to longevity. These sirtuins protect our cells against cellular damage and inflammation which further helps to prevent the typical signs of ageing. But how can you boost your NAD+ levels?

How to increase NAD+ levels

Thankfully, NAD+ levels can be regulated by coupling lifestyle changes with careful supplementation.

Lifestyle: Eating too much, drinking alcohol, and having high blood sugar are all thought to be linked to a decline in NAD+ levels. You can combat this by ensuring you are consuming a balanced diet, filled with low-sugar, nutrient-rich food items like avocados, steamed fish, peanuts, meat, green leafy vegetables and grains. These foods provide the body with vitamin B3 (also known as nicotinamide), which then converts into NAD+.

An early study of NAD+ in ketone based metabolic therapy has shown that animals eating a keto diet saw an increase in NAD+ levels, but more research is needed into its impact on humans. A keto diet is one low in carbohydrates, high in fat and protein-rich.

Supplementation: For people with ongoing medications, chronic diseases, and demanding lifestyles, dietary changes alone may not be enough to regulate NAD+ levels, as the body can use up its resources faster than they can be replaced. This is where supplementation comes in. A NAD+ IV drip is one of the easiest ways to supplement with NAD+. It eliminates the need for the absorption and conversion process from food, and provides replenishment much quicker than other means due to direct delivery into the bloodstream.

A typical NAD+ IV drip includes IV saline solution, NAD+ and may also include a combination of vitamins such as B3, B6, B12 and magnesium. These components may vary depending on your particular healthcare provider.

If you are looking for an NAD IV drip in London, we suggest doing your research and looking for a doctor-led health optimisation clinic for peace of mind. These clinics offer access to medical experts who can guide you towards the most suitable IV drip for you, based on your medical history, needs and goals. Being doctor-led means they are well placed to deal with complications should any allergic reactions occur.

NAD+: The future of anti-ageing?

Although more research is needed, it could be concluded that NAD+ shows promising signs as the future of anti-ageing. Many who have undergone the NAD+ IV drip therapy report a boost in their energy and improved overall health. However, before undergoing any medical therapy, it is advised to consult your health practitioner as they are best placed to advise you.
