Health Screenings You Shouldn’t Ignore in Your 30s, 40s and 50s

When life gets busy, it’s easy to push personal health checks down the to-do list, especially if you feel generally well. But preventative screening is one of the most effective ways to catch issues early, stay on top of long-term risks and give yourself peace of mind.

When you think about it, we put our car through an MOT each year, but we ignore the most valuable asset we have- our bodies.

In the UK, many people rely solely on NHS health checks. But with growing demand and long wait times, more individuals are now opting for private options – particularly for quick access to blood tests, heart checks, ultrasounds, or full-body scans. This doesn’t mean that you require private medical insurance. You can pay for one-off tests. For example, there are competitively priced Private GP London practices that offer comprehensive Private blood Tests in London, or fast Private Ultrasounds in London.

If you’re looking to take proactive control of your health, here’s what you should be checking, and when.

In Your 30s: Build the Baseline

Your 30s are the perfect time to get a handle on your health profile. You may not notice any symptoms, but this is when small, underlying changes can begin. Regular screenings now can help set a benchmark and spot anything developing early.

Recommended screenings:

  • Blood pressure check – to monitor early signs of hypertension
  • Cholesterol test – especially if you have a family history of heart disease
  • Diabetes screening (HbA1c test) – if you’re overweight or have a family risk
  • Cervical screening – available via the NHS every 3 years for women aged 25–49
  • Sexual health screening – especially if you’re in a new relationship or planning a family

Bonus: A full private health check can also assess vitamin levels, liver and kidney function, and lifestyle factors.

In Your 40s: Monitor Midlife Markers

From age 40, the risk of developing chronic conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease increases. The NHS offers a basic health check every 5 years between the ages of 40–74 — but if you want more thorough, immediate results, a private GP can offer a tailored review.

Recommended screenings:

  • NHS Health Check (every 5 years from 40)
  • ECG or heart health review – especially if you smoke, drink, or lead a sedentary lifestyle
  • Thyroid function test – more common in women but important for both sexes
  • Eye and hearing tests – especially if you work with screens or in noisy environments
  • Prostate exam – men over 45 may wish to start PSA monitoring

In Your 50s: Screen for Long-Term Health

Once you hit your 50s, it becomes especially important to monitor for age-related changes. Cancer screening, bone health and cardiovascular risk should all be on your radar.

Recommended screenings:

  • Bowel cancer screening – available on the NHS from 56 (home test kit)
  • Mammogram – NHS invites women aged 50–70 every 3 years
  • Bone density scan – especially for women post-menopause
  • Comprehensive metabolic panel – includes kidney, liver, and blood sugar checks
  • Lung health review – especially if you’ve ever smoked

Private health screenings in your 50s can include full body MOTs, combining a physical examination with lab tests and sometimes ultrasound or ECG diagnostics — offering reassurance and clarity in one visit.

Why a Private GP is a good option for pre-emptive screenings

While many of the above tests are available on the NHS, waiting lists and referral systems can delay results – or make it harder to request tests that fall outside specific criteria. In many cases it is unlikely that your GP will put you forward for screenings and tests unless they believe there is a medical need. This means that pre-emptive tests and screenings can be almost impossible to get via the NHS.

As an alternative, a Private GP in London, such as The GP Surgery, can offer:

  • Same-day or next-day appointments
  • Tailored health checks by age and lifestyle
  • On-site blood tests and fast results
  • Time to talk through symptoms or concerns
  • No need for private insurance

This makes it easier for people to stay in control of their health, especially those who live or work in the capital and want convenient access to expert care.

The costs are not prohibitive either. Blood testing, for example, starts at £39.

Health is the new wealth

Investing in your health through regular check-ups doesn’t need to be complicated or time-consuming. Whether you’re in your 30s, 40s, or 50s, the right screenings can provide early detection, clear data, and lasting peace of mind.

And if you’re looking for fast, flexible access to personalised care, a Private GP in London could be the answer.

If you do choose to access private services, always choose a provider that provides clear and up-front prices, and check that the provider is overseen by the CQC (Care Quality Commission).  You can access the latest inspection for your chosen health provider on the CQC website.

Articles like this which advocate accessing private health-care screenings undermine our arguments for a comprehensive and publicly-funded NHS service.
    Shame on you, Canary.
