I’m a female gamer — I’m done with the industry’s misogyny

So Sony’s State of Play closed out with the announcement of “God of War: Laufrey” on Tuesday 2 June 2026. And I absolutely adored it! The hard-hitting and stunning God of War series has chosen to change tact and, instead of following Kratos’ journey, the game will focus on his late wife Faye, as the protagonist. This is a refreshing change in an industry beset by misogyny. I love it!

As expected, this shift has sparked the usual venomous backlash from fragile men, with misogyny at its core.

Myth of a default male lead

Fragile males and their online misogyny drive me up the wall. These fragile little gatekeepers treat video games as an exclusive boys’ club. However, the data tells us that women make up 48% of gamers worldwide. The split is identical in the UK, with 50% of our gamers being women — an even split, lads.

And yet, despite us making up half of the market, we’re massively underrepresented on the screen. Standalone female protagonists are only representative of between 5% – 18% of major game releases. In stark contrast, male protagonists stand at around 69%.

What in the fuck are they doing

No fan of God of War is going to want to play this woke ass garbage

Yeah let me swap from playing as motherfucking Kratos

THE GOD OF WAR

A man who fucks multiple woman at once and kills the gods themselves

To a mid ass mid 40 yo white…

So why the hell are men kicking off so much about the new God of War protagonist Faye? It’s absolutely buckwild that having an arse-kicking female protagonist is suddenly “woke” because of misogyny in gaming. Like, is just being female “woke”? Being inclusive to literally half of the gaming customer base is somehow enlightened? And it’s “gay” to play as a female? Men, have a word.

Okay fella, let’s return to the totally hetro format of watching a scantly clad, muscular Kratos put butch baddies in chokeholds… It baffles me. This response shows just how deeply entrenched sexism and misogyny are in the gaming community. When a massive franchise like God of War flips the script, these toxic men act like developers are suddenly erasing them.

Try being barely visible in the first place, my guy.

Weaponising ‘ugly’ against women

This online meltdown continues because Faye is a forty year old woman. Weird, isn’t it? This toxic response reveals how deeply gaming spaces rely on the male gaze. Angry little men on the internet are kicking off, claiming the devs have made Faye look plain. They’re throwing tantrums because she is an older, battle-worn warrior woman. Clearly, weaponising looks against women is just another shade of misogyny. And it’s a look I absolutely love.

Finally, we have representation! Yet these weird dudes on the internet cannot tolerate a female protagonist who doesn’t exist for their own sexual gratification. They demand glamour-models, women with curves and tiny outfits that barely cover them. Well, guess what guys? The women love it! Faye is a battling through a brutal landscape of the afterlife, and she’s actually dressed appropriately.

The new God of War Faye spin-off is getting huge backlash for making the in-game character way uglier than Deborah Ann Woll, the voice and motion-capture actress behind Faye.

Get over it … This weird obsession with highly sexualised female characters is a tactic to de-legitimise women. And we are absolutely done. We want women in their 40’s. Women want realistic characters that kick arse. Women who batter monsters all over the underworld and do it in trousers. And if you can’t handle it, go cry somewhere else—misogyny has no place here.

Seems like they’re scared of powerful women

The claim that female-led games are less appealing and financially risky. Utter crap. The truth is, history tells us misogyny isn’t just wrong, it’s outdated. Powerful, non-sexualised female leads in games have already fronted some of the more successful titles in modern history.

Aloy from the Horizon Zero Dawn series is possibly one of the best examples — she’s an absolute badass. Playing as a fully clad, independent, and intelligent woman was so refreshing — finally a realistic representation for women. Sony were unapologetic when they launched the Horizon Zero Dawn, and the game went on to sell a staggering 24m copies. Aloy didn’t have her tits out, she dominated the games landscape in clothes which actually suited the environment and gameplay. And women loved it.

These angry little incels on the internet need to grow up. You’re not being erased lads, but the insistence on misogyny only holds everyone back. But they are deliberately fighting to maintain absolute dominance over an industry that left them behind.

It’s time to grow up guys, women exist.
