I have chronic illness due to an autoimmune disorder and have wondered if/how new technology might help me. The biggest barrier for me has been trust – do I trust these things enough to use them. Trust is partly about good engineering (will it work) and good ethics (is it safe, will it protect my privacy, is this just privatisation of healthcare by stealth etc) but one major issue for me is the social aspect of healthcare (do I trust this healthcare professional e.g. will this gp, consultant, nurse or other professional listen to me or dismiss me or in other ways abuse me).
While technology can help with some trust issues, technology does little to solve the social relations aspect of seeking/receiving care. I suspect the roll-out of technologies might not solve the NHS crisis the way some pundits claim it will. Yes, some of the lower barriers to good healthcare can be removed by using technology but that just puts the spotlight on the social relationship between patient and care provider. I think that is where the NHS will struggle and more technology will make it too obvious to ignore.
The only solution to poor relationships between sick people and healthcare providers is more staff, more training, more professionalism, more career-long development, better working conditions and salaries in order to retain highly-skilled staff. And all of that is very expensive. Politicians currently embrace technology as a quick fix at relatively low cost (or because it will drive ‘growth’ and ‘growth’ is their answer to every problem) but very soon they are going to find technology cannot do the heavy lifting done by human relationships in healthcare (no, not even LLM AI can fake it convincingly enough to replace a human gp or nurse).
The politicians are going to have to come full circle and start investing in people not things. Then they will have to raise taxes or switch to insurance-funded healthcare. This is the ‘nightmare’ choice they keep hoping to escape. I think the speed of technological innovation and acceptance by the public means they will run out of excuses for not dealing with this cannot-be-fixed-by-machines ‘can you trust me, I am a doctor’ problem well before 2030.
