The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced the cancellation of the eagerly anticipated La Finalissima match between Spain, the 2024 European Championship winners, and Argentina, the 2024 Copa América winners, after the parties involved failed to agree on an alternative date for the fixture.
The match was scheduled to take place on 27 March in Qatar; however, protracted discussions between UEFA and the organisers in Doha concluded that it would be impossible to hold the match on the scheduled date, given the ongoing conflict in the West Asia, prompting the continental body to announce the cancellation of this edition of the tournament.
La Finalissima disappointment
UEFA expressed its disappointment that the two teams would be unable to compete for this symbolic trophy, which brings together the champions of Europe and South America, whilst praising Qatar’s ability to host global sporting events and its advanced infrastructure, which has proven its efficiency at previous international occasions.
According to the statement, UEFA attempted to salvage the match by seeking quick alternatives to reschedule it for another venue or date, but the proposals put forward were not accepted by the Argentine Football Association. The Argentine side proposed postponing the match until after the World Cup, but the Spanish team’s tight schedule prevented this option from being adopted.
In a final attempt, Argentina announced its willingness to play the match on 31 March, but this date was also unsuitable for the Spanish side, causing negotiations to break down completely and leading to the decision to cancel this edition of La Finalissima.
Yuiva concluded his statement by thanking Real Madrid, the organising committee and the Qatari authorities for their efforts in attempting to organise the match at short notice, and praised the Spanish Football Federation for its flexibility in dealing with the various proposals, despite the impossibility of reaching a solution that would keep the fixture alive.
