FIFA President Gianni Infantino is seeking to act early to avert potential crises before the start of the 2026 World Cup by making a personal request to Donald Trump, amid escalating concerns related to the political and security situation.

This move comes as the United States prepares to co-host the tournament with Canada and Mexico, while recent political decisions cast a shadow over the event, threatening to directly impact the tournament’s atmosphere and proceedings.

Securing the Tournament and Reducing Tensions

The British newspaper The Independent reported that FIFA is considering submitting a formal request to the US administration to suspend or reduce the activities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during the tournament, particularly in the host cities within the United States.

According to reports, this proposal follows widespread controversy sparked by ICE’s actions in recent months, leading some within FIFA to fear the repercussions on fans and participating teams.

Initial discussions also include the possibility of removing immigration personnel from the main stadiums that will host the tournament’s matches in cities such as New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and Dallas, to ensure a calmer and smoother atmosphere during the event.

Infantino’s concerns about Political Complications

The challenges are not limited to security aspects, extending to complex political issues, most notably the potential impact on the participation of some teams, such as Iran, given recent international tensions, which increases the sensitivity of the preparations.

In contrast, the US administration affirms its commitment to organizing an exceptional edition of the tournament. The White House emphasized that the World Cup will be the safest in history, with expectations of significant economic returns and widespread job creation.

Despite the ongoing debate surrounding the nature of the relationship between Infantino and Trump, this relationship could prove to be a significant factor in addressing the current challenges, as FIFA strives to ensure a stable environment befitting the scale of this global event.
