Spanish footballer Lamine Yamal is making headlines after sustaining an injury during Barcelona’s 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo in La Liga (Spanish football league).

Injury strikes

Yamal tore his hamstring while converting the penalty that secured the win for Barcelona. Fans are watching anxiously, fearing the injury could hamper Spain’s World Cup performance.

The full extent of the injury is still being assessed by medical staff, though the length of time Yamal will be sidelined remains undisclosed.

After scoring the penalty kick, Yamal appeared in pain immediately and collapsed on the field, prompting a substitution. Medical staff confirmed he was unable to continue, raising concerns just 50 days before the FIFA World Cup and his potential involvement.

His absence could rule him out of the crucial Clasico on May 10—a decisive match in the tournament.

Pending diagnosis

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, citing medical specialists, reported that the recovery time for hamstring injuries varies significantly from player to player, with some taking up to six weeks to heal depending on the severity. Other experts highlighted the recurring nature of such injuries, with a 30 percent relapse rate—though it’s too early to predict the timeline of Yamal’s recovery.

Mundo Deportivo also said that initial examinations revealed a tear in the posterior muscle, which could sideline the player for five weeks. This would effectively end his season with Barcelona.

With his final diagnosis still pending, many fear the 18-year-old could be out for two to three weeks—though there are warnings of re-injury.

If the injury worsens, his absence could extend, possibly ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

For now, Yamal’s injury has stolen the spotlight from Barcelona’s win. If it turns out to be serious, it could be a huge blow for both Barcelona and Spain, especially with the World Cup fast approaching.
