New polling shows that three-quarters of Americans oppose any US takeover of Greenland. And now, more than 46,000 people have signed a MoveOn Civic Action petition demanding the Trump administration stop threatening to annex the island.

Trump told reporters on Air Force One that:

one way or the other, we are going to have Greenland.

Leaders in both Greenland and Denmark, as well as US elected officials, have rejected proposals to use military force to take over the island. Greenland prime minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has previously said the island does “not belong to anyone else”.

The petition states:

The Trump administration does not care about the people of Greenland – it cares about location and mineral resources. The people of Greenland deserve to have true representation and freedom, not to be treated as political pawns.

Read and sign the petition here.
