Far-right former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has been convicted by a Brazilian court of planning a military coup after he lost the 2022 presidential election – the first Brazilian president ever to be convicted of the crime. Four of the panel of judges have given their verdict so far, splitting 3-1 in favour of a guilty verdict – enough to ensure a majority. The verdict comes despite the Trump regime’s thre

Seven other defendants have also been convicted. Bolsonaro faces a likely sentence of thirty years or longer.

Judge Cármen Lúcia Antunes Rocha cast the deciding vote convicting that Bolsonaro of trying to cling to power by force. She then condemned what she called an attempt to “sow the malignant seed of anti-democracy” in Brazil – but said that the country had resisted the attempt.

“Brazilian democracy was not shaken”, she said.

The verdict came despite US sanctions on judges involved in the case in an attempt to deter them from a conviction.
