Exclusive: Greens cave to smears, suspend Jewish anti-Zionist member for ‘antisemitism’

The Green party has suspended well-known Brighton-based Jewish anti-Zionist Tony Greenstein, in response to complaints from who he claims are Israel lobbyists.

Greenstein is one of the UK’s most fearlessly outspoken anti-genocide activists. Panicked by the Green surge, the lobby has been targeting him for some time and trying to pressure the party into taking action against opponents of Israel’s genocide. So far, Greens leader Zack Polanski has treated the pressure with the contempt it deserves, but the party bureaucracy — at best — has seemingly caved in to the smears of Israel’s supporters against Greenstein.

Greenstein was a critic of the Greens for allowing their conference to be filibustered out of passing a key resolution rightly declaring Zionism to be inherently racist. He then warned that Israel’s supporters were about to try to start something similar to the ‘Labour antisemitism’ scam. Now, the party has told him that he has been suspended by a vote of the party’s regional council — shamefully, by a vote of 11 to 1:

Even more shamefully, the notification does not inform Greenstein of the nature of any complaint against him, though he’s clear he thinks it was triggered by complaints from local Zionists. Instead, the grounds for the suspension treat historic smears against Greenstein as if they were already judged factual:

Basis of the decision

Documented history of antisemitism, including court decisions and recent terrorism charges.

Greenstein’s supposed “recent terrorism charges” consist of state action for his comments opposing Israel’s genocide and supporting the Palestinians’ legally-watertight right to resist its illegal occupation. It would take a party official maybe a minute to establish that through a simple web search.

Green Party falls for the same destructive trap

Greenstein has sent a detailed response to the party challenging its decision and the false assumptions on which it is based, and reminding it how the antisemitism scam destroyed the Labour party. And, in typically uncompromising fashion he told the party functionaries that, even after two and a half years of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, he believes “The racist press barked and you jumped”:

Accusations of ‘anti-Semitism’ in the GP have begun to mushroom. The same Corbyn playbook is being rolled out. with the active connivance of Zionist members of the GP who counterpose their Jewish identity to the genocide in Gaza and war on Lebanon and Iran.

It will be interesting to see if Zack Polanski reacts as Jeremy Corbyn did and appease the Zionists until he too falls victim. These are early days but the signs are not promising. Council candidates are being targeted on the basis of their social media posts, not for anything they have done or said

I am not surprised that you have suspended a prominent Jewish anti-Zionist. The only surprise is that you capitulated so soon and that you have done it on the basis of lies and disinformation.

Why was I not informed of the allegations and asked for a response? This is what occurred in the Labour Party where, if you were Jewish, you were 5 times more likely to be expelled than if you were not Jewish. Zionists. like anti-Semites. equate being Jewish with being Zionist. Anti-Zionist Jews pose a problem because they are living proof that this is a lie.

This campaign began. as it did against Corbyn, with the racist Jewish Chronicle on March 27: ‘Notorious antisemite’ Tony Greenstein joins the Green Party. It was followed by The Telegraph on April 8 ‘Greens open door to anti-Zionist who said Israel was ‘Hitler’s bastard offspring”

The difference between what happened under Corbyn and my suspension today is the small matter of the extermination of 200.000 Palestinians in Gaza. The racist press barked and you jumped.

Subsequently, in an exchange of emails with the party’s ‘complaints and governance officer, Greenstein pointed out why it was clear that, far from being an issue raised by the local Green party as the regional party office had stated, it had been driven by local (or national) Zionist lobbyists either inside or outside the party:

I have just been assured by the local Brighton Party chair that he had no involvement in my suspension. In other words that the complaint came from an individual or individuals.

The form you sent me therefore which says that the origin of the complaint is the local party is highly misleading and dishonest.

I want to know who made this complaint and a copy of the complaint.

Furthermore I am formally submitting a Subject Access Request for all information held on me by the Green Party.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Of course, the complaint against Tony could have come from any local Green party member as well. The situation continues to develop.

Greenstein told Skwawkbox:

I have been suspended by the Green party as part of their ‘no fault suspensions’. This is clearly an abuse of process and a political suspension. It is part of the wave of attacks being made by the media, Telegraph etc. against Black and Asian Green candidates.

What we are seeing is an onslaught by defenders of Israel’s genocide against those seen as responsible for the Zionism is Racism motion. It is somewhat ironic that the first scalp is that of a Jewish Anti-Zionist. The allegations are laughable. They mention a ‘Documented history of antisemitism, including court decisions’. This is simply a gross lie.

The reference to terrorism is even more outrageous but what it does is show that the civil liberties commitment of Green Zionists is no different from that of Labour and Tory Zionists.

The Starmer government is using the allegation of ‘terrorism’ against supporters of the Palestinians and here are Green racists adding their support.

Whoever has made this allegation should be expelled from the Green Party as they clearly don’t belong there.

Polanski needs to take the party machine by the proverbial scruff of the neck. Years of genocide have completely exposed Zionism as not just racist but murderous and innately dishonest. There was never any excuse for Labour under Corbyn to fall for the antisemitism scam. There is absolutely none whatever for the Greens, who have the benefit of hindsight, to even humour it for a second.

Antisemitism allegations against Jewish members of the community are a disgrace.

That sounds a bit like babies and bath water. Having a go at Tony in this way is clearly out of order. Throwing the entire Green Party away is foolishness. What’s the alternative? Labour? Reform?! What is essential is to replace the IHRA definition of antisemitism with a definition or description that is purely about antisemitism and does not slip in antizionism by the back door. That may be a daunting task but once the lobby has got hold there is every opportunity for them to take complete control.

The baby is anti-zionism, and by tossing an anti-zionist out of the door you have already tossed it out with your bathwater party, one that hired liberal zionist stooge Zack Polanski, an obvious controlled opposition if I ever seen it.
        “What’s the alternative?”
Not voting for your shitty parties.
And you can’t force me to vote with your bullshit false choices that all bend the knee to anti-zionist.
Vote independent but vote for Anti-Zionist politicians.

Who in the Green Party supports Israeli genocide? It was the first party to describe it as such, supports BDS and members have been very vocal in their opposition. However, to dismiss all accusations of anti-semiticism as a Zionist plot runs contrary to honest behaviour. It is a self-evident fact that Israel can be condemned for its brutalising its brutal behaviour and at the same time Jews can suffer anti-semitic behaviour, which should be addressed in the same way all forms of discrimination are. Through the sort of due process that the Greens are carrying out

I’d be interested in knowing more about this. This article only includes Greenstein’s interpretation, and I’m sure that’s because the suspension may be temporary (according to the form) so something is probably being investigated (?) which would mean that the Green Party can’t comment. But it doesn’t ring true, as the Greens as a party and the leaders of the Greens are very explicitly anti-genocide and pro-Palestine. A one-sided article with a lot of assumptions, unsubstantiated claims and no evidence doesn’t convince me in the face of what I know about the GPEW.

The Greens have been vocally anti-genocide, but that doesn’t make the party policy immune to abuse. More importantly, being anti-genocide and recognising Zionism as a racist political ideology aren’t the same thing. Zionists of all faiths could support an end to the Genocide while also still supporting Israel, and not supporting freedom for Palestinians or their legal right to return.

Jewish Zionism (same but different to Christian Zionism) has been particularly successful at intertwining itself with Jewish communities and identity, despite being a new idea in the history of Judaism. This makes it difficult for Jewish Brits to disentangle from despite the historical evidence, even more so because actively antizionist Jews risk being ostracised from their community. Zionism has also been successful at homogenising the Jewish identity – previously very diverse-and attempting to erase any history of European and Eastern European Jews that doesn’t support it. For example, before the end of WW2, most working class Jewish people were actively antizionist – the far richer history of the Jewish Labour Bund goes untold because of Zionism. So yeah.

Also, I hope you’re at least aware of your bias – both sides are unsubstantiated, but only one is anonymous while one is public and transparent. Yet you’re still more inclined to believe the side that you have even less information on is correct. Which is understandable, but biased, and as long you recognise that and are willing to counter it shouldn’t be a problem

Joanna, Tony has written so extensively on this ongoing issue that it is not condensed so quickly; many of us would find it difficult to know where to start! The disciplinary process within the Green Party is widely acknowledged to be undemocratic, some have suggested ideologically captured. It’s been like that for years. It’s used to put on NFS, expel those who might challenge a current party line. Usually if people are put on a NFS it’s about kicking them into the long grass.
I’ve obviously no idea what will happen in this case, maybe it will be over by next week as someone suggested.

A lot of politically naive people flocked to the Greens after politically naive Zara Sultana burst the Your Party momentum by running to the capitalist media and washing Your Party dirty linen in public.
They were attracted by a charismatic leader but hey radical liberals eh?
Let’s start to be politically heavyweight.
We are now in an interregnum:
    ‘INTERREGNUM.
The old order, Neo-Liberalism, is dying.
But the new cannot yet be born.
Perhaps we are all being tested.
And only the stars will ride the storm!’
But the top down vanguardists in Your Party are not amongst the stars, they want a Socialism FOR and if attacked under them the diverse w class would then just shrug their shoulders.
But the political heavyweights around Corbyn want a Socialism WITH which gives people a say in how things are run, so if attacked people will feel it’s theirs & will rallly to our cause..
And Corbyn supporters generally understand Neo-Liberalism & how to end it.
I would argue ditch the Greens (though vote for them in Council elections until Your Party is ready) then pile in behind Corbyn.
This Your Party offers our best hope for 21st Century Socialism. ❤️☮️⚖️🇵🇸

I as many others have watched with disgust and shame as the world turns away from the horrors inflicted upon the Palestinian people. The complicity of the UK adds to the shame and is well rooted in the heartbreaking history and cruelty that the Palestinian people have suffered and continue to suffer. For many the Green Party seemed to offer a glimmer of hope that there might be a voice that did not defer to the approved narrative, the viscious Zionist voice, the abandonment of due legal process and the malign influence of the Zionist lobby on all aspects of UK society, the Judiciary, the military, the MSM to name but three as the list is unending . Greensted is a brave, informed, articulate, well read man the very antithesis of those (with tragically few exceptions )that sit on our green/ red benches paid for by the Tax payer but remain subservient to the Israeli lobby and conscious of the expectations of signing up to the Friends of Israel and ever fearful of losing the lucrative rewards provided a sad shameful day.I feel totally disenfranchised almost certainly I am not alone.

The son of a rabbi, Tony deserves our particular respect as one of a great series of whistle-blowers against the barbaric, bloodthirsty military regime of Netanyahu’s Israel. That far-right entity has cold-bloodedly murdered 17,000 and more innocent Muslim civilians confined, as in a concentration camp, to the Gaza Strip under this century’s most horrific campaign of racist targetting, bombing, starving, and ethnic cleansing of the indigenous people of Palestine. This, through the decades since 1948 of deeply entrenched propaganda to establish the notion that Zionists are above the rest of humanity as “God’s chosen people” while Arabs are treated as “animals” or untermenschen, has the murderers acting with supreme impunity, describing their repeated killing sprees as “mowing the lawn”.

Institutionalised disgust for the Arab population under the colonising Zionist founders of this apartheid regime was hardened into hate early on, in which the terrorist perpetrators seizing the land, aware of that gross injustice, built up a psychological wall: an intense fear of retribution. Thus seeing themselves as victims, the notion of “defence” offered the justification to their minds of attack. “Attack first!” became the watchword. Even decades on, in Britain, observably the Zionists make their presence obvious by being triggered and on the attack, in cases of innocent comments.

Whitey could not face up to doing nothing whilst the privileged exerted their fragility against the Eastern Jews in the last century. Ulrike Meinhof was alleged to have said that greatest confidence trick was the conflation of the Money jews with their dirt poor neightbours that enabled those “impoverished decent working and middle class germans” to enable their sociopathic political elite to scapegoat 6 million poor european souls to the murderpits and gas chambers.
In tradition for the terror and rage that austerity creates, the next tranche of semitic people have been classified as sub-human and fit for extermination in the middle-east. Whitey is blinded by their privilege to see that all we have acheived is to allow or co-opt their colonialists the tak of indiscriminate terrorism of their neighbours in the Levant.
As the Arab spring showed, democracy was to be tolerated so long as it didn’t have an anti western colonial edge.
We have to stop conflating anti-emitism with opposition to that minority in Israel that are aprtheid genocidal maniacs worse than anything we saw in the appalling days of South Africa. Machine guns and muder squads are nothing when compared to the war crimes that Israel and its western sponsors have been responsible for `in Gaza and quietly on the west bank whilst our eyes have been diverted.

The only game in town is Your Party around Corbyn when fully running and they understand Neo-Liberalism and how to end it which is seismic.
For example The Tories believe in a small local state, you can have anything you want in your area as long as the market provides it and you can pay & they have crushed local government & local democracy in the process.
So Vote in the local elections for which party you want to cut.
I’ll vote Green until I have a Your Party candidate & we should be about politicising the masses.
So we need proper funding for councils so they can build more council houses & youth clubs etc.
We also need public ownership of water, energy, mail, rail etc & buses (free public transport for All) etc and each with a users council giving workers & communities a say so they feel they are theirs & will defend them.
Your Party under Corbyn, Ending Neo-Liberalism & back to a COLLECTIVISM but WITH Citizens. This is our vision for the future.

I have been writing non-stop on the Canary about the fact of two things regarding the Greens:
    1) Zack Polanski is a zionist stooge (described as such by jewish outlets) and only pretends to be anti-israel
    2) Green Party’s inability to oust a zionist stooge within their own midst means they are incapable of rooting out genocidal zionism, full stop, and these actions prove it.
Canary’s refusal to hold Green Party on account of their hiring a ‘liberal zionist’ (as one said, like saying a ‘liberal slave owner’), will allow zionists to slip more infiltrators through the cracks.
We need a party that is Anti-Zionism specifically. Every other party treats it as a secondary concern, but it should be the primary one.
    They bomb school children.
They rape children (Jeffrey Epstein et al, STILL NOT IN JAIL).
They abuse our police as footsoldiers to enforce and stifle.
    They erode our juries.
    They steal our taxes.
They make our workers enforce their genocide.
The problem of genocidal zionism is intolerable.
Just because some zionist proclaims to say they’re now opposed to zionism is not good enough. We need someone who was never a zionist to begin with who knows exactly the stakes of what matters.

This is the largest volume of comments on an article that I have seen here..

I am very pleased to see so many people speaking up and not cowered by Israeli organisations who will demand “Police on their doorsteps” for a hate crime. Time to eliminate those.

Oooh suddenly all the zios come out in force for comments. Odd that. Thinking anti zionism is racist is absolutely wild. How racist must you be to openly want to massacre Muslims in Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen and Iran all for pissrael.

I had hoped that the Greens would be an alternative to Labour. Now I see they are behaving the same. No vote from me on 7th of May.

So at the first victory by the Zionists attacking the Green Party you capitulate and give up the struggle, pathetic.

This battle is not even over, let alone the war, and people are clutching their pearls and attacking the only mass party that stands any chance of defeating Zionist influence in UK politics.

It is called a ‘struggle’ for a reason.

Join the Green Party, expel the Zionists. Expect that the attacks will increase and that to leave the party or refuse to vote for anti-Zionist candidates because of one set back simply means you have joined the Zionist cause and allowed them to win.

It’s beyond disappointing that the Green Party is allowing the same smears that targeted Jeremy Corbyn to be used to get anti-Zionists suspended. I was going to vote for them, but unless this is sorted out quickly I may not bother voting at all.

Well, after 4 days I have cancelled my membership of the Green Party with the following words:
“Your suspension of Tony Greenstein for “antisemitism” is both ridiculous and disastrous. As an anti-zionist Jew with a longstanding history of activism Tony is above suspicion. As am I. Go fuck yourselves you traitors.”

I recommend everyone else do so as well. I know, the Greens are the only hope for Britain, but this is a matter of principle that goes to the heart of BRitish politics under Herr Shturmer and we do not want to see it continue in Labour, in the Green Party, in Your Party or anywhere else. It is disgusting. My grandparents died in Auschwitz and I will not tolerate anyone abusing their memory like this. Not Israel, not a bunch of poncy pedophile politicians, noone.
