“They brought me here to kill me” — abducted Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya

Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya, the hospital director abducted from Gaza in 2024 by the Israeli occupation, faces an immediate risk to his life. The Physicians for Human Rights (PHRI) group has issued a warning about the threat after Abu Safiya’s lawyer visited him in the Nitzan prison where he is detained indefinitely without charge.

Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya — Continual torture

Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya has suffered constant beatings and torture by his captors. During the latest lawyer visit, the doctor was shackled, bore fresh injuries to his head, face and neck and was struggling to breathe or speak. His condition was so bad that he repeatedly came close to losing consciousness during the meeting.

The lawyers report that he told them not to expect to see him alive again:

This is the last time you will see me… They brought me here to kill me. I do not see myself alive. This is the end.

Abu Safiya is not an exception. Hospital director Dr. Adnan al-Bursh was raped and tortured to death in captivity. Surgeon Dr. Issam Abu Ajwa was abducted in the middle of surgery on a wounded child. Eventually released, he recounted how his Israeli captors focused their torture on his hands in an attempt to ensure he could no longer perform operations:

One of the senior interrogators had given instructions that because I was a senior consultant surgeon they should work hard to make sure that I lost [the use of my hands] and became unable to perform surgery.

We contracted scabies because we hadn’t washed or changed our clothes in six months. Your body felt like it was burning, but they wouldn’t give us treatment.

We could only drink hot water from the pipes once a day. We didn’t have shoes and they would make us stand on the asphalt with bare feet for two or three hours in 37C heat.

Lawyers for other abductees have said that their clients beg them not to visit, because before every meeting prison guards rape and torture the prisoners:
