UK politicians and ‘mainstream’ media are ignoring yet another Islamophobic attack at a UK mosque. In the latest in a string of attacks treated with indifference by the establishment, an elderly man was assaulted and subjected to racist abuse outside Noor Ul Islam Mosque in the Leyton area of London.

The victim was hospitalised by the attack. An intervention by other mosque-goers prevented the attack escalating further. A man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

Mosque attack met with state-media indifference

Keir Starmer and other government politicians did not even comment on the attack, let alone call a ‘COBRA’ meeting. The attack was almost entirely ignored by UK state-corporate media. The BBC put a small report on its website, but misdescribed the report as ‘near’ rather than outside the mosque, and cast doubt on its racist nature:

The disparity with the response to incidents linked to synagogues could hardly be greater.

The Muslim Social Justice Initiative (MSJI), responding to the attack, said:

We are horrified, but not surprised, to hear of yet another act of white supremacist violence outside one of our mosques. We express our gratitude to the brothers at the mosque who intervened and prevented further harm.

Anti-Muslim racism, from the state to the streets, continues to be treated as background noise and ‘business as usual’ for those who aren’t Muslim.

To our Muslim community: Do not let them make you feel alone. MSJI is here, alongside the many mosques and Muslim community spaces that we all hold dear.
