Memories of the World Cup final are no longer limited to photographs, tickets or signed shirts. FIFA has decided to take the concept of collectables to a new level. In fact, for dedicated fifa fans, the organisation is offering the chance to own a genuine piece of the pitch that will host the 2026 World Cup final.
FIFA has announced via its official shop the launch of a commemorative collection entitled “Piece of the Pitch – Foundation Edition”. The collection features authentic pieces of the turf to be used in the World Cup final, scheduled to take place on 19 July at Metlife Stadium. This is an unprecedented move. It aims to turn a historic moment into a lasting keepsake for collectors.
From the final’s pitch to a luxury box
According to the details published on the official store, prices for the collection start at USD $450. Meanwhile, some special editions reach around USD $3,000, depending on the additional items included with the piece of grass. Longtime enthusiasts of FIFA will certainly find these collector’s items fascinating.
Each piece will be preserved in a luxury acrylic box. It will be accompanied by a certificate or proof of authenticity confirming that it was taken from the pitch where the world champion will be crowned. Delivery of orders will not commence until after the final match. This is because sections of the turf will be cut once the tournament has drawn to a close.
FIFA targets wealthy ‘collectors’
FIFA has not made these items widely available. Published information suggests that the release will be limited to just 2,026 pieces. This is a reference to the current World Cup edition. As a result, this lends them added value among sports memorabilia collectors around the world, especially those interested in FIFA-themed artefacts.
At present, shipping is limited to the United States, the United Kingdom and a number of European countries. Most Arab countries have not been included in the list of available destinations for this FIFA initiative.
‘Investment in memories’ — FIFA’s latest cash grab
The move reflects a growing trend within global sports organisations to turn historic moments into products with commercial value. Indeed, original memorabilia is seen as increasingly desirable, especially for people who closely follow FIFA tournaments. Original memorabilia has become a growing market that attracts fans and investors alike.
Having already sold match shirts, balls used in finals, and even sections of seating from historic stadiums, FIFA is now entering a new market. Now, it is selling a piece of the pitch from the most important match in the world of football. This gives fans the chance to own a physical memento of the event that will determine the 2026 World Cup champion—a unique opportunity offered by FIFA itself.
