Media accused of ignoring ‘massive’ general strike

On 23 January, Americans in Minnesota participated in a general strike. What prompted this strike was the incursion of ICE agents, which resulted in the killing of young mother Renee Nicole Good.

Given that general strikes are obviously a threat to the powers that be, it’s unsurprising to learn the US media has shown very little interest in covering the strike:

General strike

The Canary has reported on the ICE incursion into Minnesota since it began in early January. This ongoing event has seen teams of masked agents harass, bully, and assault local people.

Worryingly for us in the UK, Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch have both spoken about wanting to emulate ICE should they take power.

As reported by People’s World, the strike was supported by workers, unions, local businesses, and various activist groups. An organiser with the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAC) said:

Our goal is to hit the corporations and the politicians where it hurts the most—their pocket books

This, of course, is how strikes work in general. It’s also why billionaires and paid-for politicians have spent the past few decades trying to diminish and smear the labour movement.

As Jacobin reported, the Minnesota General Strike was the US’s “first citywide general strike call in nearly 80 years”. This is obviously a worrying development for the greedy oligarchs surrounding Trump, as it’s a sign they’ve gone too far too fast, and now organised labour has returned as a counterbalancing force to their unchecked greed.

Unsurprisingly, large social media accounts are noting that they’re struggling to get the word out:

Smaller accounts are also flagging what they’re seeing:

so weird that you went from seeing nothing but Minneapolis coverage, to all of the sudden on basically every social media platform over the last 24 hours seeing nothing without having to search for it, on the day that they went into the first general strike in 80 years. Weird.

Regime change?

It isn’t just organised labour protesting:

If the Iranian government was arresting Christian priests for peacefully protesting, Trump and his cronies would be using it as justification for a potential invasion.

Much like with Iran, we don’t support foreign powers pursuing regime change in America. At the same time, we obviously support the citizens of any country who oppose the tyranny of their own government.
