New Internationalist launches £150k survival appeal

Magazine the New Internationalist, facing the possibility of being forced to cease publication, has launched an appeal to raise £150,000 by 7 July.

The independent, cooperatively owned magazine celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023.

The magazine said it was facing “the closest we have ever been to the lights going out for good,” explaining that costs have “soared” while readers are less able to pay.

In addition, AI and algorithm changes have hit their website traffic, and that grants are “harder to come by” as funders have shifted priorities.

It said:

Our information sphere is being rebuilt by tech oligarchs and far-right politicians intent on upholding the very power structures we have fought so hard against.

The team explained that:

New Internationalist was founded in 1973 to give an alternative perspective to the narrow representation of the Majority World in the mainstream media. Since then NI has always been one step ahead, from exposing the Nestlé baby milk scandal in the 1970’s to early warnings about climate breakdown and tech monopolies.

And:

New Internationalist has been in tight spots before, but this is the closest we have ever been to the lights going out for good.

“Together,” the appeal reads, “we can create the media we want to see in the world.”

It had raised close to £34k by June 5. You can donate to their crowdfunder here.
