Mariam Mahmood has made history in women’s football, becoming the first Pakistani player to reach the UEFA Women’s Champions League after helping Wrexham Women win the Welsh Premier League title, following her move this season from West Bromwich Albion Women, in an unprecedented achievement for the sport in Pakistan.
This achievement is not limited to statistics; it goes beyond them to usher in a new era for Pakistani players on the European stage, lending the story sporting and human dimensions that extend beyond the pitch.
An exceptional season and a remarkable transformation
The story began with Mariam Mahmood’s move this season from West Bromwich Albion Women to Wrexham Women, a move that marked a turning point in her career. It didn’t take the striker long to make her mark, as she enjoyed an outstanding season in which she scored 10 goals and provided two assists, leading her team to the Welsh Women’s Premier League title.
A historic achievement and European qualification
Wrexham’s Welsh league title was not only a domestic honour; it also secured a place in the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifiers, giving Mariam Mahmoud a historic opportunity to become the first Pakistani player to reach this prestigious continental competition.
The qualifiers are scheduled to take place in mid-July, following a mini-tournament format with single-leg knockout matches, where Wrexham will face a European club in the semi-finals; should they win, they will face another opponent in the final to secure a place in the second round.
Speaking to Wrexham TV, Mahmood admitted she had not yet fully grasped what had been achieved, noting that the moment of the final might be when she truly realises the scale of the achievement.
She noted that her upcoming participation in the Champions League represents a dream beyond description, especially when comparing her current situation to where she was just one year ago.
Mariam Mahmood — No time to celebrate
Despite this achievement, the player continues with her busy schedule, preparing for her team’s final league match before heading straight to the Ivory Coast to join the Pakistan national team’s training camp. She had missed the first camp due to her club’s title race, but returns this time in high spirits after an exceptional season.
Mariam Mahmood’s achievement is seen as more than just an individual success; it represents a major boost for women’s football in Pakistan and may open the door for a new generation of players to pursue professional careers in Europe, amid growing global interest in the development of the game.
