The International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP), alongside Declassified UK, has delivered a letter signed by almost 25,000 people to home secretary Shabana Mahmood, calling for an investigation into UK nationals who have served in the IDF (the Israeli military, often called the IOF) since the beginning of Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
The letter urges the government to examine UK citizens who have potentially committed war crimes in Gaza and if they have been involved in violations of international law by participating in Israel’s assault.
Since October 2023, Palestinians in Gaza have endured a genocide that has resulted in:
- The death of over at least 75,000 people.
- The first famine declared in the Middle East.
- The complete destruction of infrastructure.
- Forced displacement.
- Severe restrictions on humanitarian aid.
International courts, United Nations experts, and human rights organisations have repeatedly raised concerns regarding serious violations of international law committed during the conflict.
UK government must investigate all potential UK participation in Gaza genocide
ICJP and Declassified UK maintain that where credible allegations of international crimes exist, the UK has a legal and moral responsibility to investigate the conduct of its own nationals.
International law places obligations on states to investigate and, where appropriate, prosecute individuals suspected of involvement in war crimes and other grave breaches of international humanitarian law.
The submission of the letter reflects growing public concern regarding accountability for crimes committed in Gaza and the role of UK citizens who may have participated in military operations carried out by the IOF.
By delivering the petition to the government, ICJP and Declassified UK are calling on ministers firstly to ensure the thorough and independent investigation of allegations of international crimes. And secondly to ensure the UK fulfils its obligations under domestic and international law.
Beckie Walker, ICJP’s public affairs and communications officer, said:
This petition demonstrates the growing public demand for accountability. Tens of thousands of people across the UK have joined this campaign because they believe no individual should be above the law.
We thank everyone who signed and shared the petition, and we encourage supporters to continue engaging with their MPs to ensure the government responds to these calls for justice and accountability.
Our demand to the home secretary is simple, any individuals that have participated in an act of genocide, should be held accountable.
