In what can only be described as the inevitable end to an exceptional career, Egyptian football darling, Mohamed Salah, announced over X that he will be parting ways with Liverpool FC. He revealed that the current 2025-2026 season will be his last within the walls of Anfield.

In a farewell video shared on X, Salah delivered a message so heartfelt it’s sure to leave even non-football fans teary-eyed.

I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life.

The end of an era

The weight of his message was clear. It marks the end of nine legendary years at the club. During this time, the star player secured countless victories. He also placed Liverpool FC on the global football map.

Throughout his tenure, the 33-year-old scored a grand total of 255 goals, made 435 appearances, and clinched two Premier League titles for the Reds.

The Pharaoh—as he is often called—noted in his farewell video that his departure was agreed upon with the club a year before his contract was set to expire.

Liverpool FC confirmed his departure, noting that:

Salah is to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career with Liverpool at the end of the 2025-26 season.

The forward has reached an agreement with the Reds that will see him close a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield.

They added that Salah had expressed “his wish” to break the news to his fanbase. In doing so, he honoured their loyalty with transparency, respect, and gratitude.

The time to fully celebrate his legacy and achievements will follow later in the year when he bids farewell to Anfield ❤️

Overcoming bumps in the road

Things weren’t smooth sailing for Salah, particularly toward the end of 2025. Back in December, his future at the club was thrown into doubt. He was left out for three consecutive matches. Following this, Salah claimed that both the club and manager Arne Slot had thrown him ‘under the bus’ amid what he described as the team’s poor performance.

In January 2026, the Canary’s Natahan Spears reported that:

Salah staying at Liverpool is not just a matter of loyalty. It’s also a matter of odds and potential returns. With manager Arne Slot’s tactical vision and club ambitions becoming clearer, here are some of the key factors that will influence Salah’s future.

That chapter has now closed. And Salah’s departure not only marks the end of an illustrious era for both the club and the Egyptian king. It also closes the chapter on one of the most transformative decades in football history. His time at Liverpool redefined the club’s identity. Furthermore, it stands out as one of the most inspiring stories in English football.

This is especially true for Arab footballer from humble beginnings, who, despite not holding British citizenship, has became a national treasure.
