Breaking: Greens win first ever Holyrood constituency seat — oust SNP minister Robertson

The Scottish Greens have won their first ever ‘constituency’ seat at Holyrood — and ousted a senior SNP minister in the process.

Green Lorna Slater won Edinburgh Central, increasing the party’s vote share there by just under 30 points and beating second-placed Labour by 13 points. SNP minister Angus Robertson was third and will have to rely on receiving a regional ‘list’ seat.

Scottish Parliament ‘constituency’ seats are allocated to winners, making up 73 of Holyrood’s 129 places. The rest are filled by parties from their regional list to fill an entitlement decided by their vote share. Robertson is on the SNP’s regional list for Edinburgh and Lothians East and will presumably be selected to fill a place.

Slater said her win was a “significant milestone” and that she is confident of a record number of Green MPs in Holyrood after the count is finished. Labour, meanwhile, is performing even worse than predicted and its leader Anas Sarwar failed to win a constituency spot.
