‘Scottish Labour’ ‘leader’ Anas Sarwar has failed to win a constituency seat in Scotland’s Holyrood parliamentary elections. He fell more than 5,000 votes short of the tally achieved by SNP candidate Zen Ghani. Sarwar conceded Labour had failed in the elections with only 7 seats announced.
Also among the day’s failures was his Reform UK counterpart Malcolm Offord. Offord came third, more than 8,000 votes behind the SNP’s Stuart McMillan.
Sarwar has long, and rightly, been criticised for allowing Keir Starmer and his cronies to treat Scottish Labour as a subordinate branch of the Westminster party. However, he said he was standing by his recent call for Starmer to quit. He has said he is not interested in a seat in the Lords.
Both men may still get into Holyrood on the regional lists. Meanwhile, the Greens are enjoying a record day. Lorna Slater won Edinburgh Central by miles ahead of Labour. Green councillor Holly Bruce won Glasgow Southside — former SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon’s old seat — with 3,101 more votes than (8.1 points) ahead of former SNP minister Kaukab Stewart.
