Green Party expel Jewish anti-genocide activist Tony Greenstein

The Green Party has expelled Jewish outspoken anti-genocide activist Tony Greenstein, in a move that will infuriate the resistance movement. The Israel lobby has repeatedly targeted Greenstein, like the many other Jews who oppose Israel’s genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The party suspended Greenstein in April 2026, caving to complaints from Israel lobbyists. The party had done itself credit by accepting his membership despite lobby smears, but has now undone that in a split of its regional council:

Green party suspension

In an accompanying email, the party said it had reached the decision “after proper consideration”. However, it made the decision on 7 of May – a week before the deadline for Greenstein to respond to its suspension notification.

The reasons for his expulsion were unrelated to the alleged ‘documented history of antisemitism’ the party had claimed. Supposedly, Greenstein had committed “Multiple breaches of 4.8 suspension”, though no detail was provided.

But the alleged main reason was Greenstein’s criticism of those who decided to suspend him:

Despite the repeated instances of antisemitism that led to TG’s suspension, post suspension TG has displayed no contrition or regret, but rather sought to solidify his lack of any regret for his previous action by way of seeking to publicly portray those involved in the original decision in a negative light through online posts and blogs.

Greenstein said that he had nothing to show contrition about and that the party administration was giving itself the power to act as it wants with no appeal:

[the letter] refers to ‘the repeated instances of antisemitism that led to TG’s suspension’. If this is true why was there no reference in my original suspension to these ‘repeated instances’? It is as if the Chair, Laura Eccott, who proposed the expulsion, had simply made up the first thing that entered the vacuum between her ears.

Unsurprisingly I didn’t express any contrition or regret since there was nothing to regret or be contrite about. The final paragraph, that I

not only failed to show any regret or remorse, but has sought to portray GPEW negatively for seeking to distance itself from his activities and opinions, to include making false allegations concerning party members.

repeats the previous paragraph, apart from saying that I had made ‘false allegations’, none of they gave. I have also been informed that there is no right of appeal. So basically the GPC can make up whatever it wants and there is no come back.

The same party machine has increasingly surrendered to the UK Israel lobby. In a way chillingly reminiscent of the Labour party machine’s sabotage of Jeremy Corbyn, this is undermining party leader Zack Polanski and Green members. Both have taken a strong stance against antisemitism smears – and members have been sabotaged in their attempts to formally declare the obvious: Zionism is racism.

I’m a member of the Green Party and I’m quickly running out of grace with how they treat anti-Zionists within the party

I’m also a Jewish anti Zionist who left the Labour Party because of its smearing the reputation of Jeremy Corbyn and its stance on Gaza. I was under the impression the Greens were giving voice to the left, the vulnerable and oppressed and to those of us who want fairness, equality and a kinder world for our kids and grandchildren. I suppose I was wrong. No one has provided a reason for Tony Greenstein’s suspension/dismissal . Where’s the antisemitism?

How utterly infantile, craven and depressing. We’re gonna get Farage, whether we like it or not, aren’t we?
