Football fans are used to viewing the referee as the arbiter who blows the whistle to start and end the match, awards penalties and shows cards. Their presence is largely confined to controversial decisions. Rarely does anyone stop to ask: who is this person? And what has led them to take charge of some of the most high pressure sports matches?
When FIFA announced Slavko Vinčić would referee the 2026 World Cup final, the accompanying video was not merely an official announcement, but a window into the emotions of a man who had spent many years working towards a moment he had always dreamed of.
The touching video showed a hug with his assistants, tears of gratitude and words of appreciation for his family. The scene served as a reminder that a referee, however stern they may seem, remains a human being with dreams, fears and a story worth telling.

World Cup dreams began on a basketball court
Refereeing was not a goal Vinčić had set himself since childhood. In fact, football was not his first passion. He grew up in Maribor, a city in Slovenia, and loved basketball more than any other sport.
In one of his interviews, he said:
I used to play football, but basketball was my first love.
Later he drifted away from sports whilst studying telecommunications engineering, before realising that something was missing from his life. Then came the turning point that completely changed his future. His uncle, who was an assistant referee, encouraged Vinčić to try his hand at refereeing at age 20.
He said:
…I gradually realised that this was the right decision.
Years of dreaming to reach World Cup height
Vinčić did not reach the top overnight but through a career spanning decades, during which he officiated matches in the Champions League, the Europa League and major international tournaments.
When he was selected to referee the 2022 Europa League final, he spoke less about the achievement than about the sense of responsibility.
I’m filled with emotion, pride and happiness, but I also feel the weight of responsibility.
Two years later, ahead of the Champions League final, he revealed that what he was experiencing had surpassed even his earliest dreams.
When I started refereeing, I didn’t think my dreams would take me to the Champions League final.
Today, that very journey is taking him to football’s biggest stage. Refereeing the World Cup final is the culmination of a career that began with a simple decision taken by a young man innocently looking for something to rekindle his passion for life.
Even referees weather the storms
Despite his success, Vinčić’s journey has not been without its difficult moments. In 2020, he found himself at the centre of a case that caused a media storm, after police raided a gathering he was attending. Nonetheless, investigations later confirmed that he had committed no offence and his presence was purely coincidental.
Speaking about the incident, he said:
I accepted an invitation to lunch, and it turned out to be the biggest mistake I’ve ever made in my life.
It was one of the most difficult moments of his career, but it did not halt his progress.
More than just a whistle
The public may disagree with referees’ decisions, and criticism and scepticism regarding the refereeing system will continue, but stories such as that of Slavko Vinčić’s serve as a reminder that those standing in the centre of the pitch are not merely machines for enforcing the rules.
They are people who started out with small dreams, faced setbacks, accusations and pressure, and then carried on until some of them reached the pinnacle a football referee can attain.
On the night of the 2026 World Cup final, whilst the world’s eyes will be fixed on the football stars on the pitch, there will also be a man standing in the centre with a long story to tell: the story of the man before the referee, and a dream that predated the whistle.
