Farage could face a by-election over undeclared £5m ‘gift’

In the runup to the local elections, Nigel Farage became suspiciously hard to get hold of. People suspected this was because we learned he neglected to declare a £5m ‘gift’ he received. It’s clear why people suspected this, because Farage only made things worse when asked him about the payment.

Now that people have cast their votes, Farage has rematerialised, and is facing questions again. This led to an angry exchange between him and Sky News’s Beth Rigby.

As Fleet Street Fox said in the aftermath, Farage has good reason to be cagey about this issue:

As @SamCoatesSky was telling me last night, if the standards commissioner investigates and finds it should have been delayed, there’s the risk of a recall petition and a by-election in Clacton. He’s very, very worried and defensive. https://t.co/y9QLbfPhhg

Farage — A ‘gifted’ politician

As we reported on 29 April, it emerged that Nigel received a £5m ‘gift’ before he decided to run as a Reform politician. He claimed that he needed this £5m for security, with Beth Rigby questioning Farage on this when she got to speak to him:

He’s very rattled about this and rightly so. It’s a scandal. https://t.co/5kd4PXuz7G

Rigby put the following to Farage:

Beth Rigby: Nigel Farage I have to ask you you took a five million personal gift from Christian Harborne, a crypto-currency billionaire who lives in Thailand. He’s Reform’s biggest political donor; you took it just months before you became an MP; you didn’t declare it, why not?

Nigel Farage: Didn’t need to.

Beth Rigby: The rules actually say-

Nigel Farage: I’ve read them.

Beth Rigby: I’ve read them too. The rules actually say if there is any doubt about the nature of it, the benefits should be registered. And the rules state you must register all current financial interests, any benefits other than earnings received in the 12 months before an election within one month of their election. No. If any doubt, the benefits should be registered.

Nigel Farage: There is no doubt at all.

Things broke down after this, with Farage becoming very upset and emotional, and threatening to storm out of the interview, huffing:

I’ve got other interviews to do… You want to discuss the elections, we’ll discuss them, if not, I won’t bother… It’s a waste of space… Sky News, typical…

The problem for Farage is there clearly is “doubt” about this £5m payment.

Doubtful

On the day that we learned about the payment, Farage claimed his house had been firebombed, although the details of this incident have since been disputed:

David Bull also lied about Farage's house being firebombed.

The Bromley police told us all that that was a lie. No such thing ever happened. https://t.co/2L2HPGZ3o0

Farage’s argument is that he didn’t need to declare the £5m ‘gift’ because it wasn’t political. For the public to believe that, they’d have to believe it’s possible for a wealthy foreign investor to secretly give multi-million pound gifts to British politicians without said gifts resulting in any sort of undue influence.

The problem is no one believes this.

On the crypto millionaire himself, the Observer put the following out today:

Apparently Farage's "mystery billionaire" Christopher Harborne is an "intensely private person."

This is what Rose Cocker reported for the Canary on 6 March:

Speaking of shilling for the interests of the wealthy…

Back in May, Farage told the Las Vegas Bitcoin Conference that his party would launch a “crypto revolution”. On the same day, Reform announced that it would start accepting donations in crypto.

Then, in the very next financial quarter, Harborne’s major £9m donation to Reform rolled in on 1 August. It was the largest ever gift from a private individual to a political party.

At the time, the Canary highlighted that Harborne also donated millions to the Brexit Party in 2019, as well as to the Conservatives between 2001 and 2022. While Harborne is British, he’s now based in Thailand.

Clearly, voters should know that Farage took £5m from a wealthy crypto-enthusiast given his recent support for the scam-linked financial tech. And as the Observer reported, he now faces:

two possible probes: one by the Electoral Commission, which has been considering whether his failure to declare the sum may have breached electoral law; and a standards commissioner investigation to see whether Farage has breached the members’ code of conduct.

The Electoral Commission will decide whether to launch a formal investigation as early as this week, The Observer understands, with the team weighing up the extent to which the cash was used for Reform party purposes.

Will anything happen?

The problem, of course, is that Britain is incredibly weak when it comes to enforcing election law. That doesn’t mean the story won’t do damage to Farage, though — especially when you consider all the other questions around Reform politicians’ handling of financial affairs.

At the same time, it would be nice to force Farage to defend his seat. We’re sure fronting the cost of the campaign would be no problem for him, of course, because random millionaires keep gifting him sacks of cash.

I am amazed your not mentioning that Farage lied about buying a house in Clacton. Not once but twice and then when the truth came out he said he misspoke. How many people misspoke about buying a house. Let’s be honest, something he is unfamiliar with, he lied.
Plus, where did the money come from to buy the house. The answer seems to be changing on a daily basis.

It is political grift but oh so blatant in front of everyone and there must have been some interference from the likes of Trump and Putin they are all inexplicably entwined, they are all opposed to democracy, they all openly have spoken out against the UK, Farage is supported by overseas politics from both America and Russia, they are all threats to international and our national security. It’s about time people realised Farage is not working for the UK but for the wealthy and political driven right wing mostly from America and to drive us into their money driven country. If this carries on say goodbye to the NHS and any resemblance of democracy. He is the true enemy of the UK.
