MPs jeer when told normal people don’t get cheap booze at work

In April, the Green Party’s Hannah Spencer attracted controversy when she suggested MPs shouldn’t be drunk at work. To be clear, said ‘controversy’ came from MPs and journalists; the public mostly all agreed with her. These MPs haven’t wised up to that fact, however, which is why they’re still carrying on like this:

MP's groaning and jeering as Hannah Spencer points out her constituents have to pay the full price for a pint whereas MP's get their alcohol subsidised #PMQs pic.twitter.com/Hc9PAN7Hyj

Let the MPs jeer

In the clip above, Spencer says:

In Gorton and Denton, we have to pay full price for a pint, but here, for some reason, it is cheaper. Some MPs drink before voting, and that really shocked me when I came to Parliament, because this is our workplace.

The choir began jeering at this point and continued throughout her question. Spencer continued:

Does the Prime Minister agree with his own MPs who have defended their right to drink cheap alcohol at work, or does he agree with me that MPs should not be drinking on the job, given that we vote on huge things like the climate crisis, disabled people’s rights, housing and child poverty?

We’ve reported on such MPs before, including this specimen:

Four years ago he got drunk, sexually harassed a woman and was racially abusive to a journalist. And got away with it. Coyle should have maybe kept out of this one. https://t.co/mE7nBXomLi

Starmer responded to Spencer by not responding to Spencer:

First, can I welcome the hon. Lady to her place, because I think this is her first question in PMQs? There will be different views on whether people should be able to enjoy a drink here or not, but I think we can agree that the majority of people in this country want an economy that works for them, public services that are there when they need them, and every child going as far as their talent or ability will take them.

The only way to deliver that is through a Labour Government, as we are doing. The Greens think that their leader walks on water. It turns out that he just lives on water and does not pay his council tax!

Starmer’s career, meanwhile, is drowning in a shallow puddle.

The people have spoken

Regardless of what our soon-to-be-ex PM thinks, the public agrees with Spencer:

With Green MP Hannah Spencer criticising fellow MPs for drinking alcohol ahead of evening votes in Parliament, the British public likewise disapprove – 76% brand this unacceptable, including 52% "completely unacceptable"

Maybe if Labour had spent more time listening to the public and less time sinking pints, we wouldn’t be in the twilight of the Starmer government.

Please can this Green Party member stop doing pieces pretending to be impartial?

Its deceitful and diverting new generations into an illusionary party political system which hates them.

    Its also really really thick.

Starmer’s reply was neoliberal bullshit – every child going as far as blah blah blah. This idea, that individual outcomes are doen to individual ability, effort and so on snd tediously so on, is utter bullshit. One inly has to look at the structures of society to see that the limits to possibility are profound, all encompassing and explain most of people’s outcomes, however “far” they travel. The distribution of work (because that’s what Starmer means, and ultimately wealth) is an obvious one. The combined efforts of every single person in the UK has no influence upon the number of toilets that need cleaning, or supermarket jobs or CEO positions. None whatsoever. And none of these is a natural phenomena, they’re all made up categories of activity, emerging from cultural norms. The distribution of pay is based solely on power. Social mobility is a myth, and only has meaning in hierachical social systems. Noone should have a need to be socially monile, because noone should live in a society that either oppresses them or places them in poverty. Govt the world over is utter toxic to human and all other life.

Given people aren’t even allowed to be drunk when driving something as “simple” as a car, I don’t think any MPs should be allowed to drink any alcohol when driving something as complex and as serious as this country.
Can we do breathlyser tests at the door and sent away the ones that blow over the limit? Maybe charge them for attempting to run a government whilst under the influence?
    Bunch of fat, lazy pricks.
When does the civil war start, anybody know? Maybe we can get these fat bastards to run and lose some weight before they get summarily executed at an impromptu trial.

Bars and catering are run at a loss, costing taxpayer millions every year. MPs are allowed to run up considerable debts, but although they are supposed to be named and shamed, every effort is made to prevent the publication. If benefit claimants are in debt UC imposes considerable deductions from their monthly payments. With the high pay, second incomes, cash for lobbying, why are they exempt from having considerable deductions for running up taxpayer bar and food bills? It constantly amazes me why any of them are referred to as ‘Right Honourable’ Those who get drunk keep their jobs while ordinary workers would be sacked if they turned up smelling of alcohol. The sheer hypocrisy of do as I say don’t do as I do is at play. If there are any decent MPs who want to set the example for constituents to follow they should speak up in Parliament and lobby for an end to a wonton abuse of taxpayers money.
