A fundraising campaign for the family of a rail worker who died with coronavirus after being spat at on a station concourse has topped £30,000 as her union issued demands over staff safety.

The gofundme initiative has received more than 1,700 individual donations following the shocked reaction to the death of Belly Mujinga.

British Transport Police has launched an investigation after Mujinga died a fortnight after the incident at London’s Victoria station.

The Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) said many of its members were now fearful for their safety.

Officials contacted Mujinga’s employers, Govia Thameslink Railway, on 14 May, calling for greater protection for workers.

The union said staff should continue to work in ticket offices and not be made to work on concourses, and should be given proper protection.

Workers with underlying medical conditions should be stood down immediately, and any assault on staff should be investigated, the union added.

Mujinga, who had an 11-year-old daughter, was approached by a man who identified himself as being infected with coronavirus (Covid-19) as she worked on the concourse at the London transport hub on 21 March.

She subsequently fell ill and died in Barnet hospital on 5 April.

We know everyone is suffering under the Tories - but the Canary is a vital weapon in our fight back, and we need your support

The Canary Workers’ Co-op knows life is hard. The Tories are waging a class war against us we’re all having to fight. But like trade unions and community organising, truly independent working-class media is a vital weapon in our armoury.

The Canary doesn’t have the budget of the corporate media. In fact, our income is over 1,000 times less than the Guardian’s. What we do have is a radical agenda that disrupts power and amplifies marginalised communities. But we can only do this with our readers’ support.

So please, help us continue to spread messages of resistance and hope. Even the smallest donation would mean the world to us.

    1. I am so sorry. Somehow this story has really got to me. How terrible that workers like Belly are exposed to such dangers. The Unions must step up their demands and see all workers are fully protected including those not yet unionized.
My thoughts are now with her 11 year old daughter. I hope she is being looked after.
