Content warning: the following article contains images of animal abuse that some readers may find distressing.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has released a first-of-its-kind whistleblower exposé of a major contract laboratory in India, unearthing evidence of shocking animal abuse and murder.

Notably, it documents how staff left dogs lying in pools of blood and suffering from untreated, painful wounds. Alongside this, it uncovered the laboratory killing newborn minipigs painfully without anesthesia, and the slaughter of sickened monkeys carrying zoonotic viruses.

Palamur Biosciences: profiting from the torture of animals, as PETA has exposed

Palamur Biosciences is self-proclaimed as “one of the largest preclinical service providers” in India. It advertises its services for EU chemicals and pesticide registration.

However, PETA’s latest investigation lifts the veil on the horrifying abuse towards animals inside its facility.

As a contract laboratory, Palamur Biosciences makes money poisoning beagles and other animals for the highest bidder.

Photographs and video footage show dogs lying in pools of blood:

Dogs in some experiments suffered “like hell” with untreated and open, painful wounds, a whistleblower said:

The investigation uncovered how dogs in other experiments suffered ulcers in their mouths or intestines. According to a whistleblower, some staff kicked animals or closed cage doors on their legs, causing fractures.

The Palamur Bioscience laboratory kept some nearly 1,500 dogs in a space designed for only 800. It forced three to four dogs into cages meant for just two, leading to fights and serious injuries:

Lifting the lid on shameful animal abuse

PETA also unearthed how Palamur had obtained wild-caught rhesus macaques from a supplier. Some tested positive for dangerous pathogens, likely monkeypox. The company kept the matter quiet despite the health risks and killed the monkeys:

In another shocking finding, a minipig got pregnant, and because Palamur did not have a license to breed the animals, staff killed all the piglets without sedation by a painful injection straight into the heart:

PETA head of science policy Dr Julia Baines said:

This footage lifts the lid on the shameful facilities that leave beagles suffering in pools of blood, imprison wild animals, and violently kill young pigs. PETA India’s groundbreaking exposé makes it clear that regulators in India should immediately take a stand against animal abuse by shutting down Palamur Biosciences.

PETA India has submitted complaints to regulators in India, urging immediate termination of the contract laboratory’s registration to use animals in testing, prosecution under applicable rules, and rehabilitation of surviving animals.
