Welsh First Minister and Labour party leader Eluned Morgan has resigned after losing her Senedd seat in Ceredigion Penfro to Plaid Cymru. The loss had been predicted since this morning and caps a disastrous day for Welsh Labour, alongside its counterparts in Scotland and England.

In her resignation speech, Morgan took the blame for the party’s “catastrophic” performance and declined to blame the abysmal Keir Starmer. This was a big contrast with Starmer’s hangers-on, who have flung blame and made excuses for their own failure and smeared their betters.

I was always clear that this election was about choices here in Wales. I have been clear throughout the campaign that Keir Starmer was not on the ballot paper. I will not now be a hypocrite and point the finger of blame at others. I was on the ballot paper and I take responsibility for this result, and that is why I will step down as leader.

Keir Starmer absolutely 100% WAS on the ballot paper. There were many good, hard working Labour councillors – people that I helped elect 10 or so years ago – who lost their jobs yesterday simply because they were tainted by their association with Starmer. So yeah, I guess it’s down to their poor political judgement.
