Green Party supporters happy they can vote ‘for a positive reason’

Green Party supporters have been expressing their excitement about being able to vote “for a positive reason” rather than tactically.

Popping that Green vote in the ballot will never not be refreshing. Knowing youre voting for a party for a positive reason and not having to hold your nose and vote for someone just to stop something worse 😍🟢💚

Some have said the massive Green membership surge under Zack Polanski’s leadership has helped to make Green wins more realistic and hopeful:

‘Fighting for a fairer society’ with the Green Party

Tim Dowson, a Green Party candidate in Jesmond ward in Newcastle, told the Canary:

It’s angered me how government policies, Tory and now ‘Labour’, penalise poor people for being poor, and have cut social facilities while channelling money to the rich and to large corporations.

He added:

I joined the Green Party as it’s the only party fighting for a fairer society, and for protection of the climate and wider environment that is being dangerously polluted and damaged by big business, and because it wants to make our government fairer and refuses money from rich lobbyists.

Throughout the local election campaign, we have spoken to Greens and other progressive candidates across the country. And we heard stories of cooperation on the left, hard work on community campaigns, and a strong desire for love, compassion, and justice to prevail over the hatred and division of the Reform-Tory-Labour lot.

Being realistic, of course, widespread change is a massive challenge for now because of our highly problematic electoral system. As the Electoral Reform Society has explained:

England’s First Past the Post (FPTP) voting system is likely to deliver numerous highly disproportional results, with parties possibly taking control of councils where they didn’t win the most votes and councillors elected on tiny vote shares. First Past the Post simply cannot cope with this new reality of multi-party politics.

But the Green Party has consistently called for a more proportional voting system. And the energy and excitement surrounding the party right now are a cause for hope.

The Greens are likely to be the big winner on the left in this local election. And that means their voice will be much louder. Hopefully, it will also mean we’ll be hearing a lot more about the campaign for a fairer voting system in the coming months and years.
