Greens oust Haringey council leader, fall one short of majority in Lammy’s turf

Bilderberg conference attendee and Labour Together-backed MP, David Lammy, whose pals include Peter Mandelson and JD Vance, will be sombre today. Just weeks ago, he was boasting that the Greens could never take his seat.

Well, the Greens have ousted the Labour leader of Haringey Council from her seat. The London borough of Haringey has been a Labour stronghold since the 70s. However, in the 2024 general election, candidates to the left of Lammy took a big chunk out of his vote share.

Peray Ahmet’s seat in Noel Park ward of Haringey was taken by the Green party.  Greens won 28 seats in the borough, just one seat short of getting majority control of the borough. Labour’s majority has now been reduced to just 21 seats out of the overall 57 seats in the borough.

Lammy’s boast will haunt him

Matt Kennard, celebrating the Green surge in local elections, said that Greens will be taking his seat at the next General Election.

The Greens are taking your seat at next general election you genocidal war criminal

Then we are making sure you face justice at The Hague https://t.co/2zWdCCpv1y

The pro-Israel MP’s record since becoming a Cabinet minister has been particularly egregious, which has added to Haringey Labour’s loss.

Lammy’s wrongdoings include, but are not restricted to:

  • continued support for Israel;
  • his greed for donations;
  • boasting about his friendship with Vance;
  • plans to reduce the number of jury trials;
  • his apathy towards  political prisoners who were at risk of dying from hunger strikes;
  • his secondments for BAE Systems and Shell to the governments.

Haringey Labour ejected pro-Palestine voices

Haringey Labour, true to form, has echoed its leader’s contempt for human rights.

For instance, in a shocking incident last year, Haringey Labour stopped the then independent socialist councillors from speaking about a tabled motion calling for divestment by the council from companies linked to the genocide in Palestine. The councillors were ejected from the meeting.

On Monday independent councillors tabled a motion calling on @HaringeyCouncil to cut financial ties to companies enabling Israel’s crimes, including divesting its pension fund

Reposting Zionist content

The Haringey Labour account has also re-posted a post from one of their councillors — Adam Small — on being a proud Zionist. Small was re-elected in the current elections.

Haringey Labour ignoring community voices

Not that Haringey Council, controlled by Haringey Labour, was doing well on other fronts.

Haringey Green Party co-chair Erin Wolson told The Canary recently that Haringey Council ignores what residents tell them in consultations and makes it hard for people to get involved in local government.

Wolson won in the ward where Ahmet was standing.

Beefing with Owen Jones

Ahmet once sneered at Owen Jones when the former Labour activist resigned from the party after 24 years.

In March 2024, she tweeted: ”

Must be really exhausting being Owen Jones. Having to spend each and every day thinking about new ways to make everything about you.

Jones is now celebrating her ousting, too. Ahmet’s mockery has aged terribly indeed.

Two years ago, I quit Labour and backed the Greens and independents.

This is how the then-Labour leader of Haringey council responded.

Yesterday, she lost her seat and her council to the Greens.

Maybe listen next time @perayahmet! pic.twitter.com/3TDeWuL8ts

Ahmet is gone, Lammy is next!
