A Warwickshire zoo has come up with a pretty novel idea for promoting World Orangutan Day, by letting in ginger-haired human visitors for free.

Twycross Zoo announced the move on their website in July, stating:

While raising a laugh, the event is important for everyone who cares about preserving Orangutans in their domestic habitats. As Twycross Zoo points out:

We are currently working at the forefront of ape conservation, as partners of the United Nations Great Ape Survival Partnership (GRASP) to ensure the long-term survival of great apes and their habitat in both Asia and Africa. The number of Orangutans in the wild has declined by 50% over the past 60 years according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and this rate of decline is expected to continue – so it is absolutely vital that we work with other organisations to ensure the conservation of these beautiful animals.

On Friday 19 August, the zoo will be letting anyone with red hair in for free – male, female, adult, child, strawberry blonde, auburn, fiery red, natural or dyed – it doesn’t matter. As long as you have red hair you can enjoy a free day out at Twycross Zoo. Staff operating the zoo’s ticket booths will be issued with a special Twycross Zoo red headed colour scale too –  just to make sure.
