A Tory MP who urged people not be “litter tossers” has been accused of hypocrisy after he was fined for dropping a cigarette butt.

Tosser exposed

Richard Holden, MP for Durham North West, was one of two people caught by neighbourhood wardens outside the election count at the Louisa Centre in Stanley, County Durham, on 8 May, and was given a £100 fixed penalty notice.

Last summer, Holden launched a lockdown litter-picking campaign in his constituency, saying it was “unacceptable” that beautiful areas were strewn with rubbish, and he said he backed enforcement action.

On his website, he said:

More broadly, I’ve a clear message. Don’t be a litter tosser; just take it home.

Holden tweeted about a series of litter-picks he organised in his constituency last year.

The butt of his own joke

Neighbouring Labour MP Kevan Jones, who represents Durham North, which includes Stanley, said:

It is very hypocritical of him lecturing others on picking up litter when he is doing it himself.

Ian Hoult, Durham County Council’s neighbourhood protection manager, said:

We can confirm one of our neighbourhood wardens observed two people littering outside the Louisa Centre, Stanley, during Saturday’s local election count and issued them both with fixed penalty notices.

Holden’s office has been approached for comment.

We know everyone is suffering under the Tories - but the Canary is a vital weapon in our fight back, and we need your support

The Canary Workers’ Co-op knows life is hard. The Tories are waging a class war against us we’re all having to fight. But like trade unions and community organising, truly independent working-class media is a vital weapon in our armoury.

The Canary doesn’t have the budget of the corporate media. In fact, our income is over 1,000 times less than the Guardian’s. What we do have is a radical agenda that disrupts power and amplifies marginalised communities. But we can only do this with our readers’ support.

So please, help us continue to spread messages of resistance and hope. Even the smallest donation would mean the world to us.
