Theresa May is facing another no-confidence vote, this time from Conservative members rather than MPs. And the political pressure could end her embattled premiership.

Conservative members have had enough

Enough Conservative constituency chairs have signed off on the vote, which will take place in June. The incoming motion on whether May should resign marks the first of its kind for 185 years.

Chairman of the Bethnal Green and Bow Conservative Association Dinah Glover organised the petition. She explained:

We have come to the conclusion that Mrs May, rather than being the solution to Brexit, is actually the block to Brexit

The vote is non-binding, but will heap pressure on the prime minister. And May’s premiership could well be coming to a close. On 29 April, a Whitehall source told the BBC:

It is very unlikely Theresa May will preside over a substantive Queen’s speech. It will be for the next prime minister to set out their substantive agenda for the next phase of policy making.

The no-confidence vote from Tory members is not the only history May will have made. During her tenure, the prime minister also suffered the largest parliamentary defeat of all-time on her Brexit withdrawal agreement. And MPs found her administration in contempt of parliament, in a historic first.
