UK media coverage of Scottish politics
Image description
This cartoon is titled “UK media coverage of Scottish politics”. It shows a bar graph, and the first bar is tiny, coloured green, and labelled “Usual”. The second bar is massive, coloured like a Scottish flag, and labelled “When a distraction from Westminster is needed”.
We know everyone is suffering under the Tories - but the Canary is a vital weapon in our fight back, and we need your support
The Canary Workers’ Co-op knows life is hard. The Tories are waging a class war against us we’re all having to fight. But like trade unions and community organising, truly independent working-class media is a vital weapon in our armoury.
The Canary doesn’t have the budget of the corporate media. In fact, our income is over 1,000 times less than the Guardian’s. What we do have is a radical agenda that disrupts power and amplifies marginalised communities. But we can only do this with our readers’ support.
So please, help us continue to spread messages of resistance and hope. Even the smallest donation would mean the world to us.

Not only does the BBC (for one) simply not report news in Scotland, it reports news that only applies to England as though it applies to the whole UK. For example it reports announcements on English education when this is a matter devolved to each nation. So why is this on the main news? It confuses people who think this applies to their children when it does not, likewise for much of the COVID announcements.
But even worse than this is that Scottish news reporting, when it does happen, is done from a distance by those unfamiliar with Scotland or her politics. Basic errors of fact are made and facts are overlooked either in error or deliberately. Much of this was seen in the Referendum in 2014, the Scottish press had been reporting on this for quite some time and dug into the issues, resolving much of it. About three weeks before the vote BBC London took an interest and ignored all their own Scottish based journalists earlier findings. Scottish news is treated like foreign news and despite having reporters on the ground all of the reporting done by the national news is done from a distance of hundreds of miles with all the lack of knowledge that entails.
Some, of course, is deliberate. As with the deliberate misreporting on the Salmond criminal case. It’s not that there ‘wasn’t enough evidence’ to convict. Rather it was that all of the evidence confirmed that the complainers had fabricated their case. There is even more which is being deliberately witheld by the Crown Office at the behest of the government. See Craig Murray’s blog for details.
Being Scottish is rather like being Chinese or Russian, you feel like you are regarded as ‘the enemy’
