No wonder Tory MPs don’t want to give our nurses a proper payrise

We know everyone is suffering under the Tories - but the Canary is a vital weapon in our fight back, and we need your support

The Canary Workers’ Co-op knows life is hard. The Tories are waging a class war against us we’re all having to fight. But like trade unions and community organising, truly independent working-class media is a vital weapon in our armoury.

The Canary doesn’t have the budget of the corporate media. In fact, our income is over 1,000 times less than the Guardian’s. What we do have is a radical agenda that disrupts power and amplifies marginalised communities. But we can only do this with our readers’ support.

So please, help us continue to spread messages of resistance and hope. Even the smallest donation would mean the world to us.

    1. Rather a misleading graph! Assuming newly qualified nurses are in their 20s(some will be older) they have every chance of reaching a six figure salary. The average pay of a Chief Nursing Officer in London is £98.500 pa. (Source Indeed). Most MPs of all parties will only ever be on the basic salary.
Expenses are just that, travel, accommodation, office costs. Expenses do not go into an Mps pocket. They are the same expenses a journalist claims for travel, PCs, entertainment of contacts etc.

      1. Hardly. Both the MP and the band 5 nurse salaries are the starting salaries, so the comparison is a just one. However, the MP requires zero qualifications whilst the band 5 nursr requires a degree and years of study.

The high figure you cite is for a consultant, the peak of nursing expertise. To reach this level requires many years, a career-long pursuit of specialist skills and qualifications to supplement vocational experience. There are naturally many fewer positions at this level – only a few will achieve it. Most nurses will never see the exalted pay of a new MP.

Perhaps nurses should be eligible for expenses, such as travel, parking and accommodation, study and training, as incentive to stay in the demanding nursing profession particularly in the challenging early years.
